Courthouse asbestos removal driving up costs

Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star while the estimated $8 million renovation of the Columbia County Courthouse is proceeding on time, the cost of asbestos removal far exceeds what was projected, while estimates continue to climb. Approximately $192,000 in change orders for asbestos work have already been submitted, according to Columbia County Department of Public Works Commissioner David Robinson. The county originally estimated $70,000 for asbestos abatement work. The Board of Supervisors Public Works Committee were briefed Wed., June 26, on additional project costs, including a $500,000 new heating system and a $56,000 overrun for electric design plans.
