Local Korean War vet group disbands

The Columbia Paper is reporting the Columbia County chapter of the Korean War Veterans has disbanded due to a decline in membership, the group announced a recent press release. Chapter 283 has been active for 15 years in its effort to keep alive the memory of the war, which was waged from 1950 to 1953. The group is now down to three members: Bill Woods, United States Navy; John Neary; United States Marine Corps; and Jack Hallenbeck; United States Army. They are among the nearly 2 million U.S. veterans who served in Korea. More than 33,000 U.S. service members died in the conflict, including seven men from Columbia County.
