License plates to cost more soon

Aug 19, 2019 11:43 pm
Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office announced a poll of new designs for license plates on Aug. 19, garnering all sorts of headlines. But, more important to taxpayers' bank accounts, beginning in 2020, car owners face new fees when getting those license plates for their cars. Everyone with plates at least ten years old will have to pay a $25 "plate replacement fee." And if you want to keep your current plate number, it will cost you $20 more. With nearly 12 million vehicles registered in the state, officials project the "plate replacement program" will raise lots of money for Cuomo to spend next year.
