Catskill Village Board to hear about creative economy

Sep 11, 2019 1:45 pm
The Catskill Village Board on September 11, will hear a presentation on the local creative economy as part of long-term Comprehensive Plan for the village, according to Robert Tomlinson. Tomlinson is a Catskill resident and the spouse of Margaret Tomlinson, the chair of the Catskill Democratic Committee. He serves as manager of the Catskill Mountain Foundation's gallery and bookstore in Hunter. Tomlinson is looking to brand Catskill as "a village of makers." He is proposing a the village create an action plan that includes a 25-year comprehensive plan for arts and culture, the creation of an arts district with tax incentives for the development of live and work spaces, and the dissemination of information on the creative economy via the village and town websites. He also wants the village to contribute to an artists emergency fund, create an arts and economy sister city relationship for cultural exchanges and designate a poet laureate every year. The ambitious list also includes the creation of a public art fund, an annual arts festival or street fair, and an "Arts Citizen of the Year Award." The Catskill Village board will hear the presentation at 7 p.m., Wed., Sep. 11, at the Rip Van Winkle Center on Thompson Street in the village.
