Elsa Keslassy is reporting for Variety New York-based Grasshopper Film has acquired North American rights to Hudson resident Ephraim Asili’s debut feature, “The Inheritance.” The film had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and a screening at the New York Film Festival. Grasshopper intends to have “The Inheritance” open on March 12 at Film at Lincoln Center, as well as in other cities. The ensemble film takes place almost entirely in a West Philadelphia house, where a community of young people comes together to form a collective of black artists and activists. The Pennsylvania-born filmmaker, Asili has been exploring different facets of the African diaspora for nearly 10 years, and “The Inheritance” is based on his own experiences in a Black liberationist group. The film stars Nozipho McClean, Eric Lockley, Chris Jarell and Julian Rozzell Jr. It was produced by Asili and Victoria Brooks. In addition to his film work, Asili is a DJ and was a volunteer on-air host on WGXC-FM from 2013 until 2018. He is an Assistant Professor of Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College.
