GOP officials gather in opposition to driver's license bill

Apr 25, 2019 1:45 pm
Mallory Moench is reporting for the Times Union Republican officials from the region gathered in Troy, April 24 to voice their opposition to proposed legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. Republican State Sen. Daphne Jordan, of Halfmoon, was joined at a press conference at the Rensselaer County Department of Motor Vehicles, by Assembly member Jake Ashby, Rensselaer County executive Steve McLaughlin and Columbia County Sheriff David Bartlett, among others. "This isn't about immigrants; this is about our laws, what's legal and protecting our law-abiding citizens," said Jordan. Supporters of the bill from the Green Light Coalition were also present, debating speakers on facts and singing "This Land is Your Land" in the middle of the press conference. Bryan MacCormack, director of the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement, was also present, and said 100 businesses Columbia County support the bill. The measure, as proposed, would allow undocumented immigrants to sign an affidavit and then provide a passport or other foreign-issued ID to get a license after passing a standard driving test. The license would not be REAL ID-compliant, making it unusable for airline travel. The legislation would also prohibit the DMV commissioner from sharing the application information with law enforcement without a warrant or subpoena. The Republican officials speaking at the press conference said the law would jeopardize public safety by inviting identity, bank and voter fraud since New Yorkers with licenses can register to vote.
