DEC considering trash surcharge

Aug 25, 2023 12:21 am

Amal Tlaige reports for News10 that New York's Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing a statewide fee for every ton of trash that does not get recycled or composted. The $5 surcharge per ton of trash, the DEC says, would discourage disposal and generate $133 million per year. The DEC said in a statement, “By focusing on reducing waste at its source, returning materials back to productive use, and diverting waste from landfills, harmful greenhouse gas emissions will be avoided while sustaining the supply chain.” In all, the DEC's proposed Solid Waste Management Plan got more than 1,000 comments from the public.
