Matt Bathrick reports in the Columbia Paper the Chatham Board of Education voted Tues., June 25, to close the middle school building on Woodbridge Avenue and consolidate students into the district's remaining two school buildings, effective July 2015. Board member Craig Simmons was the lone dissenting vote. Under the consolidation plan, the 6th grade will be moved to the Mary E. Dardess Elementary School, and grades 7 and 8 will be relocated to the high school building. The board expects to realize approximately $450,000 in net savings as a result of the consolidation. Prior to the vote, the board was presented with a petition signed by 167 residents, asking the decision be delayed by a year in order to consider alternative proposals.
