African American Shakers

Aug 16, 2014: 1pm- 11:59 pm
The Shakers promoted and practiced equality within their communities, though several paradoxes existed within their official stance on race. From making and selling shackles to slave owners, to participating in the Underground Railroad in New York, the Shakers’ relationship with their black brethren and sisters was not always simple. Explore the issues of race within the Watervliet community with this special tour focusing on African American Shakers. The tour will begin at the 1848 Meeting House at the Shaker Heritage Society.
