Adult Learning Institute: Participants will learn their watershed address and recognize through experiential activities the hierarchical nature of watersheds. They will increase their knowledge of and facility with physical, chemical and biological indicators of stream quality with a visit to the Kahseway Kill. In 1860, the Kahseway Kill was described by J. H. French in the Gazetteer of the State of New York as a “principle watercourse, its intervale broad and fertile.” The Kahseway Kill is a Class C tributary to the Hudson river that runs through the college campus. A permit authorizes the discharge of sanitary wastewater (Outfall 1) and water softener backwash water (Outfall 2) to Kahseway Kill. An overview of the components of stream monitoring protocols will take place streamside. Participants are encouraged to dress properly and wear appropriate footwear for a short walk on Conway Road across from the water treatment building on campus to the Kahseway Kill. The intent of the program is to introduce participants to a general awareness of water quality and instill a commitment to sensible stewardship of water resources.
