February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. An evening-length dance piece set to composer Julius Eastman’s (1940-1990) jubilant work of the same title, “Femenine” (1974) is a celebration choreographed by Kyle Marshall, with music performed live by the BlackBox Ensemble. Dressed in non-binary expressions, six dancers ebb between joyfully queer geometry and dense solos of honesty, creating a community driven by musicality and dramatic moments of power. Washed in an ocean of bells, vibraphone, brass, woodwinds and strings, the work carries us through spaces for softness and affirmation, revealing the shadows and shimmers of Eastman’s life and legacy.

This month’s volunteer work party will take place at Greenport, where we can come together and care for the land! This work party will focus on making the pollinator patch shine! Projects will include clearing out non-native weeds around the fence, installing a pedestrian gate, and tagging native plants to keep in the pollinator patch. As part of the workshop, volunteers will learn to identify both native and non-native plants, as well as effective strategies for removing weeds.

All are welcome to lend a hand at this fun, friendly volunteer event.

What’s involved: This volunteer event is a choose-your-own-adventure experience! A variety of tasks will be available for people of all experience levels and abilities. To reach the work site, volunteers will travel approximately a quarter of a mile along the Access for All trail, which is ADA accessible and features gravel terrain.

All are invited to explore the studios of the 2025 cohort of artists-in-residence at Art Omi, intermingled with pop-up performances, site-specific installations, and other creative activations. Open Studios offers an intimate glimpse into the work of international artists from a range of disciplines and techniques—from painters to performance artists, sculptors to sound artists, you're invited to take a trip around the art world without ever leaving our Studio Barn!

All are welcome to join us for presentations and a discussion with a panel of experts. This year's theme focuses on community science and participatory projects. Registration is not required but encouraged.

Learn basic cybersecurity skills to control your sensitive data and protect yourself from unwanted surveillance. The workshop will guide participants through concrete actions and a simplified step-by-step breakdown of setting up and maintaining personal digital security across your devices. The workshop will be followed by a Q&A session and discussion.

An-in person workshop will be offered at the Wave Farm Study Center at 5662 Route 23 in Acra, NY at 1pm on Saturday July 12th. A virtual workshop will be held via Zoom directly afterwards at 3:30pm. In-person attendees are asked to bring a laptop and smartphone if possible. This workshop is free to attend.

Presented by the Athens Cultural Center and Oldtone Music Festival: monthly gathering on the second Sunday (2-4) of acoustic and stringed instrumentalists of all levels to enjoy playing bluegrass together! A slow jam is a welcoming and supportive, easy-tempo jam session aimed at beginning and intermediate players, but with plenty of room for relaxed experts. The group leader, mandolist Peter Paden of the Wickers Creek Band, will distribute basic chord charts for well-known tunes and songs before the session, and guide all players, no matter their instrument.

The Olana Partnership will hold its monthly Third Thursdays event on July 17 from 1:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Olana State Historic Site, capped off with a special outdoor concert with Hudson Valley views. Olana Third Thursdays are free monthly community days of tours and programs for all ages. All are welcome to celebrate summer with free tours, nature, art, music and history while participating in engaging experiences for the whole family!

This month, visitors can enjoy “Tunes with a View featuring Mariachi Citlalli” from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. as part of Olana’s summer outdoor concert series, and experience vibrant mariachi music and the sounds of Mexico, one of the countries frequently visited by artist Frederic Church, all set against the backdrop of Olana’s stunning views. Family, friends, and a picnic are welcome for this lively outdoor celebration. Senior Curator Sara O’Keeffe provides a special tour of the exhibition Harold Stevenson: Less Real Than My Routine Fantasy, the first institutional solo exhibition in New York of Harold Stevenson (1929–2018).

A one-night-only solo performance by renowned multidisciplinary artist Rahill. A founding member of the seminal NYC psych-rock outfit, Habibi, and a monthly resident on NTS radio, Rahill has garnered a reputation for alchemizing an eclectic range of influences, distilling them into captivating and heavy pop songs that gesture towards the modes and melodies of the Iranian/American household in which she was raised—a heritage she has continued to nurture via successive trips to Iran. Informed by her lifelong, genre-spanning musical explorations, Rahill’s songs occupy a familiar, contemplative mode—blending jazz, trip/hip-hop, and folk traditions spanning east and west.

Craig L. Frank, Ph.D., a longtime researcher at the Huyck Preserve, presents a unique experience with the bats that live at the Preserve. This event will start with a brief presentation on bat ultrasonic biology and, as the sun sets, you will observe acoustic monitoring of the bats flying over Lincoln Pond. Dr. Frank will show participants how the data collected is used to identify the bats as they visit the pond to feed.

The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth by Zoe Schlanger

A discussion of themes of ecology and humanity’s relationship with nature with other book and nature lovers in our reading and hiking club! Each month we will go on a leisurely hike with stopping points for book discussion. Some months will have guest lecturers.

Pirates, prophets, and musical mayhem in “South: A Nautical Musical,” an original musical debuting July 24–August 3 at Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill!

It’s 1860, and a sailor named Wheeler is searching for his missing mother with only a locket to guide him. But in "South: A Nautical Musical," the sea has other plans. This bold, original musical from composer Carmen Borgia sends Wheeler into the path of pirates, relic dealers, tangoing traitors, and an island of self-actualized lesbian cannibals. Directed and choreographed by Timothy Dakin-Dunn, the show features Latin-influenced melodies, live musicians, a cast of 11, theatrical spectacle, and a healthy dose of metaphysical madness!

Sisters is a band that was formed in the UK and now they are embarking on their first ever tour in America. They are bringing with them a freshly released single and an exciting show. Livia: A Roman Tragedy, though set in ancient Rome, is an urgent message for our time.

An evil, corrupt, narcissistic emperor has seized the throne, and the late Roman Empire is in chaos. Livia longs for her lover, who has left Rome to lead the forces gathered in rebellion against the incompetent, debauched emperor. She tries to understand how the once noble Roman republic has crumbled and Rome has succumbed to the tyrant's hand. She struggles with the feeling that she is isolated in her opposition to the demented clown. What can she do to save her society?

Old-world cabaret collides with modernity in this sui generis ensemble whose mysterious, otherworldly soundscape draws on European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock. Barbez will be celebrating the release of a new 7-inch vinyl called Elegy for Gaza (Avant Night), a heart-wrenching plea for peace in Gaza and the group’s first new release in seven years. Legendary one-man band The Lonesome Organist makes a rare journey East. Human cultures have directed their gaze towards the heavens for thousands of years. On the shores of Lake Myosotis, the Huyck Preserve hosts a presentation by ethnoecologist Justin Wexler of Wild Hudson Valley about the importance of the stars, the moon, and the darkness of night for Northeastern Native Peoples. This event is organized by the Rensselaerville Library and hosted at the Huyck Preserve.

Dr. Paul Spector is certified as a trainer with the American Academy of Sports Medicine. In this class, he shares exercises that improve postural stability, core strength, spatial body awareness, sensory integration, agility, and coordination. The class will serve as an important space for community through its focus on healthy connection, breathing, and its encouraging atmosphere.

Long running, peripatetic cable access station HUD-TV is moving to its new home in Circle 46 Gallery, and we are pleased to invite the public to celebrate with us. HUD-TV has been a long-time media resource for the Hudson, NY area. Established 4+ decades ago HUD-TV is a solid, though enigmatic local entertainment and news resource. HUD-TV is also an artist residency project by Mark Allen.

An evening of new and in-progress movement works from the 2025 cohort of Art Omi: Dance Residents. The Dance Showing features unique collaborative pieces created in response to the grounds and studio spaces at Art Omi by dance artists from around the world.

Gothic​-polka band Dust Bowl Faeries and their spirit animal Hazel invites you to join them for a night of musical intrigue as ​they investigate the mysterious death of ​ legendary taxidermy familiar, Hazel the Ram. Hazel lives on in the afterlife as a re-gendered spirit guide, but her soul cannot rest until the truth of her murderous decapitation and taxidermical conversion is revealed and justice is served. You can help solve the mystery whilst enjoying an evening of dark cabaret music. Audience members will be invited to participate as both characters and jury members in this macabre musical tableau.

Sunday, August 3 at 2 pm, the MTHS’s Train Station will house an exhibit of the works of Nathan Dolinsky (1890 – 1980), an artist, instructor, and founder of Camp Schoharie. Nathan Dolinsky was a long-time resident of Hunter, where he painted a variety of subjects in his studio into his 80’s.

He encouraged people to visit the “Dream Garden” a space and home, he designed as a wedding present to his sister, to celebrate the fine arts. He began his formal training at the age of 10 and was the youngest exhibitor at the famous 1913 Armory Exhibition in NYC. At 23 he began a 6 year tenure as an instructor at Cooper Union, married a beautiful nurse named Blossom, toured Europe, and returned to Hunter to found Camp Schoharie in the 1920’s. His works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute and the Munson Museum.

The exhibit will include several works and prints of others representing his portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes. It will also include a diorama of the “Dream Garden” grounds and indoor space. The exhibit is curated by Carol Slutzky-Tenerowicz assisted by Johanna Titus. Viewing hours are Saturdays and Sundays during the month of August, from 10-3 each day.

The youngest children in your life are invited to join you to enjoy a walk in the woods with Membership and Outreach Coordinator Kate Martin. Children, up to age 3, and caretakers will enjoy a relaxing walk while learning about nature and the Preserve. In this month’s Little Wonders Storytime, Mr. Purple will read There’s No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System by Tish Rabe, and he’ll lead a fizzing moon activity! Children will create a “moon surface” using baking soda and then use droppers to add vinegar, watching as the craters fizz and bubble like a volcanic eruption on the moon. This activity is safe, interactive, and allows for hands-on exploration of chemical reactions while learning about space concepts.

An all new edition of our biennial outdoor theatrical triptych. Three original new works will be presented as a roving performance with audiences traveling by car to experience each play in a secret site-specific location where the setting becomes one of the characters!

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. While floating in Meizinger Lake, participants will help care for this special place by removing invasive water chestnuts from the water.

What’s involved: This volunteer event will include walking .1 miles to the Jim Woodruff Memorial Kayak Launch and sitting and paddling a kayak for an extended period in direct sun. Please note that this event will start at the Gale Road entrance!

What to bring: Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Kayaks will be provided, but CLC welcomes individuals to bring their own kayaks.

The WSZF is a fun, inclusive and kid-friendly event. Come one, come all!

WSZF is a labor of love–sponsored by the West Stockbridge Cultural Council, 100% organized and run by volunteers, neighbors and friends. All festival games, contraptions, booths, artwork, and decorations have been dreamt up and handcrafted by the lovely folks in the W.S. community. All proceeds from WSZF games and merchandise go to the WS Cultural Council Zucchini Festival Fund for future community events.

Columbia County Sanctuary Movement hosts their 2nd Caribbean Festival in Albany, NY From 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM at Jennings Landing!

Last Year's Festival was one for the books! It was filled with good vybez, music, and laughter. The Caribbean Festival drew 2,500 attendees throughout multiple states. The Festival showcased 16 live performances, highlighting artist across various genres of music within the diaspora. This year's Caribbean Festival will boast an array of popular local and international musical and cultural performances. We will have traditional stilt walkers, healing stations, circus and other activities for kids, community resource tables, and more.

All are invited to join us for a day of community family fun with the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement.

Seed Song Farm hosts an afternoon of collaborative eco-art along our agroecology trail, followed by a relaxing evening of local beer, wine, and farm-fresh snacks. Come create, connect, and unwind in nature.

Forest Bathing is a Japanese practice. It’s a process of relaxation; known in Japan as shinrin yoku. The simple method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees, observing nature around you whilst breathing deeply can help both adults and children de-stress and boost health and wellbeing in a natural way. Beth Lewis Rennig will lead the group on a 90-minute Forest Bathing experience, helping to ease us into the presence and connection within nature, on the MTHS grounds.

Back by popular demand, Sarah Van Buren (SVB), Hudson Area Library's new Youth Services Manager, facilitates a third round of Youth DJ Workshops, for ages 9-18. We are stepping outside of the Hudson Area Library for our summer Fix-It Picnic, back at Waterfront Wednesdays! Hang with us by the river and experiment with natural dyes. In this class, he shares exercises that improve postural stability, core strength, spatial body awareness, sensory integration, agility, and coordination. Inspired by the writing of Anton Chekhov, Life in this House is Over is a tragicomic work set at a funeral and a wake, entering a world beyond known logic to examine the social awkwardness, humor, and weirdness of grief.

Shay asks questions Chekhov posed years before: how do we move forward when an uncertain future presses on a dying past, where emblems of nostalgia are intertwined with the complexities of human suffering? Is connection possible in a world drawn taut by the force of imminent change?

The piece was developed at Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, where Shay was a guest artist & researcher. It features artists from two significant theatrical lineages: current and former artists of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch (including luminary Julie Shanahan, who returns to PS21) and the Polish Grotowski Institute theatre company, Teatr ZAR. A kaleidoscope of artistic influences, the work erupts from one medium to the other, refusing to impose a single viewpoint, leaving the door open for the audience to comprehend a myriad of themes.

Calling nature enthusiasts of all ages for a Nature Quest! CLC and the Roe Jan Library host a Nature Quest hike at Siegel-Kline Kill.

During this program, we will walk along the Nature Quest trail in search of six hidden animal stamps. We may even encounter Nature Quest mascot, Earl the Squirrel!

What to expect: We will walk one mile along the Bluebird trail, stopping frequently to collect Nature Quest stamps. Trails are partially forested and mowed grass paths along an open meadow. More trail information can be found here.

On August 4, Remix ⟷ Culture will kick off its fourth Tanfis artist residency, bringing together a new cohort of NY-based artists from underrepresented communities — African-American, Colombian, Mexican, Occaneechi-Saponi, Taíno, and Jamaican — to collaborate through a process guided by the following existential questions: “Where do we come from? What have we become? Who do we want to be?”

The culmination of this 3-week communal-living, collaborative process will be the Tanfis IV live experience premiering on August 22nd, 2025 at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC). Tanfis IV Live will be co-designed and performed by the artists-in-residence alongside four featured guest artists, and will take the audience on a journey seamlessly and harmoniously weaving in live acoustic traditional music, audio and video remix and storytelling.

With a unique, immersive arrangement that pays homage to pre-modern collective music practices, Tanfis IV live will be held within a ceremonial circle: the artists at the center, the audience gathered all around. This communal ritual space invites you to witness, move, reflect, and participate — immersed in 3D sound of live music and video projections.

This will be a shared space of ritual, resistance, memory, and imagination. We look forward to sharing it with you.

Part conversation led by Mike Amari of Chosen Family and part DJ set by a WGXC volunteer, the series highlights local artists, musicians, venue owners and bookers, and record label owners. This month’s event features a discussion with Elizabeth Ibarra of Catskill-based band Camp Saint Helene and record label Misery Mother. DJ set by WGXC Programmer Alex Daud ("A Frequently Visited Dream") whose music with the Catskill-based band The Fascinating Chimera Project has been released on Misery Mother. Entry by donation. Kicking off EMPAC's TOPOS Music Festical, Pulitzer Prize–winning composer and visual artist Raven Chacon sheds the gravitas of the art world and returns to one of music’s most raw and immediate forms: the band. Drawing on his roots in noise, thrash, and metal (Tenderizor, KILT, White People Killed Them), Chacon channels that energy into an exploratory, almost meditative excavation of American musical traditions: country, folk, and their haunted echoes.

Lazyhorse marks the latest chapter in Chacon’s nearly decade-long collaboration with The Living Earth Show (percussionist Andy Meyerson and guitarist Travis Andrews). Known for transforming the chamber ensemble model into a platform for genre-defying invention, The Living Earth Show builds immersive sonic worlds with their collaborators. After their lauded piece Tremble Staves, Chacon and the duo return with a new vision, this time centering songcraft, improvisation, and the unruly edges of music.

At its core, Lazyhorse is haunted by the spaghetti western—a film genre that injected moral ambiguity into the clean-cut heroics of the American frontier myth. In Chacon’s hands, these disillusioned antiheroes become sonic archetypes, spectral guides complicit in westward violence, leading us through a landscape where distortion, silence, and satire collide.

Commissioned by EMPAC, Lazyhorse assembles a powerhouse lineup: Mali Obomsawin (bass), Miriam Elhajli (vocals, guitar), Steve Hammond (lap steel), Chacon (keys/guitars), and The Living Earth Show. Together, they form a genre-exploding band that dissects and reconstructs the mythology of Americana, stitching together songs that are as biting as they are hauntingly beautiful.

This is no nostalgia trip: Chacon’s topos is resistance. Lazyhorse confronts the violence of empire through sound, turning the stage into a site of reckoning, reclamation, and radical reimagination.

As part of the TOPOS Music Festival at EMPAC, pioneering producer, composer, and performer King Britt brings Liberation Meditations: A Call to TOPOS, joined by collaborators Suzi Analogue and Myles Ortiz-Green. Within the 39-speaker spatial soundscape of EMPAC Studio 1, turntables, analog synths, and digital textures are marshalled to move bodies–physically, emotionally, spiritually.

This is dance as ritual, rhythm as resistance. The topoi here are movement, celebration, and gathering—a communion forged through frequency and vibration:
“In times of chaos, the practice of centering oneself becomes not merely beneficial, but essential. Music (and movement) have long served as vital instruments of liberation and spiritual practice,” King Britt says, “functioning as forms of sonic centering. Mantras, in particular, have held a profound role in facilitating ritual connections to source energy, often yielding tangible physical and mental healing. These practices have been especially crucial to the endurance and resilience of communities of color.”

Liberation Meditations: A Call draws from deep archives—historic speeches, interviews, fragments of collective memory—reframed and recomposed as mantras grounded in the ethos of freedom. The result is an improvised, immersive, and spatial offering: healing in intent, ancestral in knowledge, futuristic in sound.

TOPOS presents the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by celebrated composer-performer Sarah Davachi. The Rose Dialogues, scored for two violas, cello, organ, and electronics, begins with the simplest of musical devices—the canon (or, which can colloquially be thought of as a round)—and spins an oceanic world of unexpected harmonies, haunting melodies, and formal surprises.

The topos of Davachi’s work is listening itself. Her music invites a deep attention, drawing us gently into the slow blossoming of her sonic landscapes. Within the veritable ocean of alternate tunings and temperaments, we are carried by waves of respite and repose, a darker pull that nudges us toward the unexpected.

Joined by musicians Eyvind Kang, Whitney Johnson (violas) and Lucy Railton (cello), Sarah Davachi’s piece moves slowly and with a precise ear for timbre and harmony. Its surprises feel hard-won, emerging from a rigor rooted in early Western compositional techniques: counterpoint, canon, heterophony, polyphony. And yet, her music is timeless, a dilated present that inches towards an uncertain yet harmonious future. A future that, in listening, seems to go on without end.

Join the newly formed Chamber Music Churchtown for a two concert festival celebrating chamber music. A spectacle of sound and light, Greek composer Iannis Xenakis’s epic work Persépolis was originally commissioned by the Shiraz Festival in Iran, taking place in the ruins of the Temple of Darius in the Iranian desert on August 26, 1971. The performance—lasting over an hour starting at sunset—included two lasers, military searchlights, huge bonfires, 150 torch-bearing children, and six listening stations outfitted with eight-channel speakers, one for each track of Xenakis’ electroacoustic score.

Persépolis was the second of Xenakis’s Polytopes, large-scale works—from the Greek language poly meaning many and topos meaning place—monumental works that sought to fuse sound, light, colors, and architecture into a single, immersive site of sensory experience. For Xenakis, the topos was not just spatial but sensorial: an encounter with the totality of an intermedial artwork.

Reimagined for EMPAC Studio 1 by sound artist and composer Micah Silver, Persépolis becomes a magmatic mass of noise, snaking its way across a multitude of discrete audio channels. In many ways, Xenakis’s work is less a concert and closer to an extreme weather event: light, color, raw sound, and stagecraft combine to create a dramaturgy of turbulence, compression, and blistering immediacy, then release. Over the course of an hour, the piece overwhelms—and ultimately expands—the senses, rewarding those who listen and watch with openness.

Preceding the presentation of Persépolis on Saturday, August 30, a rare screening of director Pierre Andregui’s documentary Xenakis Portrait 1971–72 will shed light on the piece and the strange and fascinating context in which the Polytope Persépolis was born.

Ranger Rachel leads a short hike up to the top of the Rensselaerville Falls, where you will view the waterfall and Rachel will discuss the significance of meditation in nature. You can then settle into a spot on the ground, and Rachel will guide you through a short body scan meditation, followed by a 10-minute silent meditation. Once you complete the meditation, Rachel will walk the group back while stopping along the way to direct anyone who wants breakfast at Kuhar's Cafe to the Post Office Trail before continuing to the Visitors' Center.

It is advised that you wear suitable clothing and shoes for hiking and sitting on the ground. This is an event for ages 15 and up.

From country to house, chamber music to noise, TOPOS features the world premieres of commissioned projects by composer-performers Raven Chacon and Sarah Davachi, alongside performances by King Britt, Suzi Analogue, and Myles Ortiz-Green in Liberation Meditations: A Call.

In what could be described as a kind of “installation opera,” a languageless score by Verity Standen holds and moves us through a relentlessly physical performance; at times meditative, and at others arresting and highly charged.

With themes of death, renewal, and hope, Arch points towards the extraordinary, yet flawed, systems humans create: language, economies, architectures, democracies – and, inevitably, to the impact of these systems on our ecological system, and on ourselves.

The premise is disarmingly simple. What takes place is straightforward. But the emotional aftermath remains devastatingly complex.
