An exquisite combination of breath, heart, and muscle entangle with the perpetual inevitability of collapse to draw the audience into a compelling emotional journey.

In what could be described as a kind of “installation opera,” a languageless score by Verity Standen holds and moves us through a relentlessly physical performance; at times meditative, and at others arresting and highly charged.

With themes of death, renewal, and hope, Arch points towards the extraordinary, yet flawed, systems humans create: language, economies, architectures, democracies – and, inevitably, to the impact of these systems on our ecological system, and on ourselves.

The premise is disarmingly simple. What takes place is straightforward. But the emotional aftermath remains devastatingly complex.

All are invited to bring the youngest children in your life and enjoy a walk in the woods with Membership and Outreach Coordinator Kate Martin. Children, up to age 3, and caretakers will enjoy a relaxing walk while learning about nature and the Preserve. Meet other caregivers and children while seeing the beauty of the woods as the seasons change. Infants are welcome, but please note that our trails are not suitable for strollers.

You're welcome to join us for outdoor* yoga classes led by Pamela Martin and other local yoga teachers. Learn tips and tricks to avoid injury, and to help support the body during gardening and yard work. A stretch and strength class appropriate for multiple levels. Please bring a mat, water, sunscreen and bug spray. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.

* in case of inclement weather, sessions will take place indoors in the Education Center.

This program starts just after our garden volunteering ends. Please feel free to join us for volunteer gardening.

You're invited to join Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm every Thursday to help tackle the invasive species that threaten the health of the Preserve. Volunteers will learn how to identify and manage a different invasive species every week.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. Interested in starting your own Homegrown National Park? At this upcoming talk with founder and acclaimed author Douglas Tallamy, you can learn about the grassroots movement and how small changes made by many people can have a measurable impact on local ecosystems.

This talk will focus on strategies for land care specific to Columbia County and ways, big and small, that individuals can get involved. Specific strategies will include planting natives, creating habitats for the species we love, and ensuring forests are resilient to future threats, such as climate change.

This event marks the return of the exhibit, "Hudson: A History of Whaling & Maritime Commerce," at the Hudson Area Library and features local actors reading heart-wrenching, impassioned, and occasionally amusing letters from crew, captains, wives, and heroes. In between these tales, a chorus and attendees will sing rousing songs and shanties about life at sea. The drama will be narrated by the character of Captain Edward A. Chapel, a long-time Hudsonian and whaler. The musical director for the performance is Alex Harvey, an expert on whaling songs who performs songs of the sea in a project he calls ShinBone Alley.

The performance was conceived by library trustees Miranda Barry and Gary Sheffer using letters uncovered during research for the library’s exhibit on Hudson’s whaling past. Free. In person, Hudson Area Library Community Room.

“A stirring tale of survival, thanks to man's best friend.” Honoring the 100th anniversary of the epic 1925 Serum Run by which Alaskan sled dogs and their drivers brought diphtheria antitoxin serum to Nome, AK, to suppress a raging epidemic. The heroic 647-mile dash of dog teams across the Alaskan wilderness inspired the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Hike to the Coliseum in Elka Park while discussing the book with author Laney Salisbury of Woodstock.

Limited to 12 hikers: Hikers are encouraged to read the book to get the most from the hike with Ms. Salisbury. Copies may be obtained through local libraries, the Mid-Hudson Library System and at Amazon. The Mountain Top Library and the Hunter Library are members of the Mid-Hudson System. Dogs are not permitted on this hike which is on private property.
