Do you appreciate folk art a la Grandma Moses? If the answer is "yes," you won't want to miss the paintings of Allen Foster. Foster has been professionally recreating Columbia County village scenes and individual historic homes for over half a century. As he nears his 90th birthday, some of Allen’s work is now on display through March 1 in the recently dedicated Meeting Room of the Kinderhook Memorial Library. Local residents throughout the county have generously loaned their paintings of Kinderhook scenes and Columbia County homes; works from Mr. Foster's private collection round out the show. Rachael and Vilray perform the same sort of mid-20th century jazzy pop familiar to fans of Rachael’s jazzy, soulful pop outfit Lake Street Dive. Rachael Price and Vilray met at the New England Conservatory of Music in fall 2003 and became friends. Their sound recalls both the warmth of radio’s golden age and the intimacy of parlor concerts in a time before recordings.

A four-hour class devoted to teaching you what you need to know to begin, and continue, this pastime. Covered in the class are the basics of wood identification; as well as the layout, carving and finishing a hardwood wooden spoon. Focus is on carving technique, and hopefully, by the end of the class, participants will leave with a spoon of their own making, as well as the wood, skills and tools necessary to start another spoon. Participants should specify their dominant hand at application.

[1] Soundmark: This is derived from the term landmark. A soundmark is a sound which is unique to an area. In his 1977 book, "The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World," R. Murray Schafer wrote, "Once a Soundmark has been identified, it deserves to be protected, for soundmarks make the acoustic life of a community unique." p. 10. ISBN 978-089281455-8.
