Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley is looking for a team of volunteers to conduct an adult English as another language drop-in class for speakers of other languages, to be hosted by the Ichabod Crane Central School District. No previous teaching experience or foreign language background is necessary. New volunteers are required to attend a free orientation session and to complete the online training modules. Trained volunteers are provided ongoing support as they work with students. A follow-up meeting to this orientation session will be held Mon., Nov. 19.

Christopher Williams of Partnerships for Regional Invasive Species Management will share research on invasive species, teaching invasive species identification, and encouraging citizen science through the use of iMap Invasives. Anyone willing and able is welcome to stay after the educational program for the work day potion of the event, where participants will have the opportunity to join Williams in the removal of certain invasive species on the Huyck Preserve property. The Bushwick Book Club brings a program of music inspired by books to the Tivoli Library, featuring Lusterlit, Jessie Kilguss, and Don Rauf. Founded in Brooklyn in 2009 by singer-songwriter, Susan Hwang, the Bushwick Book Club is a unique literary/musical event that employs the talents of local songwriters and artists who plumb the depths of a chosen literary gem to create that rare and beautiful thing – a new song (or visual art, dance, film or snack). All songs are then performed at a live show. The Bushwick Book Club now has several branches all over the world, including Portland, LA, Seattle, Malmo, Sweden, Santa Barbara and New Orleans. The Bushwick Book Club Podcast was launched last year. The artists will bring a program of songs about books including songs about the works of Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Austen, Cormac McCarthy, Roald Dahl, Julia Child, and others. Free. All Ages. Happens on the Third Floor. Lusterlit is the musical duo of Bushwick Book Club founder, Susan Hwang, and Bushwick Book Club contributor and music producer, Charlie Nieland. Jessie Kilguss is a Brooklyn-based songwriter and just released her 4th album, The Fastness, in June 2018. In 2015, she sang harmony and played the harmonium with Freddie Stevenson, opening for the Waterboys on the European leg of their Modern Blues tour. Also in 2015, she played a featured show at the Sundance Film Festival. Kilguss is a former actress who made the switch to songwriting after performing with one of her musical heroes, Marianne Faithfull, in London and Sydney in a musical written by Tom Waits and William Burroughs, directed by Robert Wilson. She also acted in the film adaptation of The Crucible, starring Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder. She’s a frequent contributor to the Bushwick Book Club, with many book-inspired songs in her repertoire. Don Rauf is the leader of NYC band Life in a Blender and a Poughkeepsie native. He wrote the underground local hit "Poughkeepsie, City of Sin." Life in a Blender's most recent album is Happy Enough and includes songs based on Vonnegut's Bluebeard, Man Without a County and the poetry of Emily Perez.

"The Bouwerie: Preservation" is presented by Hudson Hall as part of the lecture series "Life Along the Hudson: Historic Country Estates of the Livingston Family." Today’s owner of The Bouwerie, Dianne O’Neal, is joined by preservation carpenter Emily Majer to discuss the process of peeling back layers of previous renovations to discover the intentions of the original builder, Major Dirck Wesselse Ten Broeck, an early Dutch settler. This event takes place at The Bouwerie in Clermont, NY.

Author, current Grange Historian, Howard Blue, and Copake auctioneer Mike Fallon will present a PowerPoint program on two nearly forgotten aspects of Copake’s history: ice harvesting and semi-pro baseball. Blue has previously presented multiple programs on the town's history at the Roe Jan Library and the Roe Jan Historical Society.

Blue's latest program will feature recently discovered, rare home movie footage of Copake in the 1930s. It will also include more images from Blue's collection of over 3000 digitized photos of Copake. Ice harvesting was once an annual endeavor on the Hudson River, small local ponds, Copake Lake, Robinson Pond & Rhoda Pond. At one time a commercial ice harvesting operation existed at Copake Lake. Semipro baseball was played on Copake Falls Holsappel Field. Attendees will also hear about 90-year-old Joe Michaluk’s, recollections of harvesting ice & storing it in his family farm’s icehouse. All of this recalls a time gone by.

Concerts in the Village presents its 30th concert, highlighting the Broad Street Orchestra and graduates of the Bard Vocal Arts Program. Moors & McCumber, a roots music duo, perform and will also give a workshop at the hall at 3 p.m. in conjunction with Berkshire Strings. James Moors and Kort McCumber sing and play a wide variety of instruments, including violin, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, bouzouki and harmonica. While they describe their co-written music as Americana or roots music, it is heavily influenced by Irish folk music.

Chris Chafe gives a talk and workshop. “Sonification” is turning raw data into sounds and sonic streams to discover new relationships within the data set by using a musical ear. This is similar to data visualization, a strategy that reveals new insights from data when it is made for the eye to perceive as graphs or animations. A key advantage with sonification is sound’s ability to present trends and details simultaneously at multiple time scales, allowing us to absorb and integrate this info the same way we listen to music. This evening will include two events, a talk and a hands-on workshop. The talk will present an in-depth look into the potential and application of sonification. The workshop will offer participants an opportunity to work with their own data sets and explore sonification as a new approach to their data. Chris Chafe is the director of Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and approaches the practice of sonification from a background in computer-generated musical composition, using algorithms in the sculpting of musical detail. In much the same way, sonification uses datasets to generate sounds that can lead to a different or deeper understanding of patterns and processes in the sonified data. From global economic trends, atmospheric CO2 changes, or seemingly mundane events such as the ripening of fruit, sonification provides a means of gaining new perspectives on data through listening.

Many people know of Dr. Spector through his ever popular Core Strength and Balance classes at the library. Now, in this second in a series of health talks Dr. Spector discusses the topic of sleep. “Our appreciation of the consequences of sleep loss has grown over the last 50 years and now includes impaired learning, memory, decision making, and reaction time, increased risk of hypertension, seizure and migraine and many more.”, Dr. Spector says. “Colors of Columbia County,” a photographic exhibit by the members of the Columbia County Photo Club will be the latest exhibition in the library’s community room. The theme of “Colors of Columbia County” was chosen to give the photo artists the opportunity and freedom to explore the power of color in the pictures they make. This will be the eighth year for the Club’s annual show, which is hosted by the Friends of the Hudson Area Library.

Bobby Previte's Blueprints. Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance. Amanda Brennan, Public Health Education Coordinator/Opioid Educator from the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health gives a community Narcan training. If you have an expired kit, you can bring it with you and get an updated one. As part of the training, participants receive a naloxone kit. Narcan is a prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose. If given to a person who has not taken opioids, it will not have any effect on him or her, since there is no opioid overdose to reverse. The Department of Behavioral and Community Health offers a wide array of services and programs to become a Healthy Dutchess for our Residents, Visitors, and Businesses in Dutchess County. "The Hudson River Valley in the American Revolution, Fortress West Point, & the Great Chain.” Col. Jim Johnson, in the uniform of the 5th NY Regiment, will be speaking about Washington’s “key of America” or Fortress West Point on the Hudson River. As the center of the colonies at the time of the American Revolution, the Hudson River Valley provided a nexus for the conflict and hosted many key figures, battles – Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton, and political events throughout the eight years of war. The American Revolution played out along the Hudson’s banks – from the first riots protesting the British Quartering Act on Golden Hill in Lower Manhattan, to the chaining of the Hudson and Benedict Arnold’s attempted betrayal of West Point in the Highlands in 1780, to the Battles of Saratoga along its northern shores where Arnold played the role not of traitor, but of hero. The Hudson River Valley was essential to the birth of our Nation.

Environmental sound installation at EMPAC, RPI, Troy. The Isle Is Full of Noises is an environmental sound installation composed by Michael Century, RPI professor of new media and music, with the assistance of Eric Miller, Ph.D. student in electronic arts. Century’s installation employs Wave Field Synthesis speaker arrays to spatialize an 8-channel sound composition. “The Isle Is Full of Noises,” is taken from Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. The characters of Caliban and Miranda are foregrounded against the auditory backdrop of an imaginary tropical island. Visitors will hear poetic text, phonemic particles of language, birds, animals, and occasional snippets of melody. “Caliban can be taken as the figure of the indigenous people of the ‘New World,’ a slave to an imperious foreigner with magical powers Caliban’s speech, which begins, ‘Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,’ articulates with great beauty the abundance of sonic life on the island.

What is Kava, you ask? It's a plant-based beverage originating in the Pacific islands with natural sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant properties that is quickly gaining popularity in the west as a delightful alternative to alcohol. Audience members who wish to participate in Kava consumption should arrive at 7:30 p.m. We like a concoction that pairs Kava with Oat milk, cinnamon, and honey, but can accommodate other preparations upon request. Henry Birdsey is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and recording engineer from Vermont, working primarily with microtonal organ, lap steel, violin, and homemade instruments. Jen Kutler is a sound-based performer and sculptor. She modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments.

Choreographer Adam H. Weinert’s "Rip the Nut" is a pantomime-style, Hudson Valley-inspired mash-up of the Rip Van Winkle story and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. Dancers Logan Kruger, Brett Perry, Davon Rainey, and Emma Sandall join Weinert and a host of community partners organized by Operation Unite NY for three performances.

Drop Forge & Tool is celebrating Hudson Winter Walk with our 2nd annual Kindling; a devised performance created by a group of creator/performers adept at making something from nothing. The group arrives on Thursday evening and will spend just 36 hours creating a new performance inspired by this year's theme: “gifting.” They will then share what they’ve made with the Winter Walk public on Saturday evening at 442 Warren Street. Performers: Barbra Berlovitz, Michael Hoch, Lisa Kitchens, Paul Kite, Amii LeGendre, Francis Magai, Mariana Newhard, and Micah Thomas. Accessibility Note: Performance will involve going up and down stairs.

Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist, and electronic musician who has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of the Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The Four plus One Ensemble and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley, among others. Commissioners include the NEA, Meet the Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, BAM, and Earshot Jazz. Collaborators include Paul Taylor, Liz Lerman, Bill Irwin and Gus Van Sant. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including two MAP grants and the NEA American Masterpiece award. Recent compositions include The Heartsong of Charging Elk based on the novel by James Welch and 55: Music and Dance in Concrete: a site-specific collaboration with dancer Yukio Suzuki and video artist Yohei Saito. He is the music programmer for The Royal Room, a performance venue in Seattle, Washington, and a professor of composition at the Cornish College of the Arts. Basilica Hudson closes its 2018 season with a celebration of the arrival of winter and an interactive musical procession of candles, humans and myths. The whole family is invited to take some quiet time out of the modern world, into the candlelit past. The event is open to all. Hot cider, tea and apple cider donuts will be available to purchase. Attendees should dress warmly for this reframing and recreation of the ritual as a celebration of the natural environment as the season changes.

Produced in partnership with Harpooned Productions, Winter Spiral will be a large-scale installation and multidisciplinary performance featuring music, movement, sculpture and ritual and drawing on ancient traditions.

Weekly classes will resume on Tuesdays with two levels: Advanced Beginner (5:30-6:30pm) for students of Spanish who have taken at least an introductory course in the language, and Intermediate (6:45-7:45pm) for those conversational in Spanish and who wish to further develop their skills. There will be a celebration of the students’ work at the conclusion of the series for both levels on December 4 from 5:30-7pm. Adults and high school students are welcome.

The Historic Hudson Boat Restoration and Sailing Society is holding a Volunteer Rally for all society members and new volunteers. The event, open to the public, will discuss planned events leading up to the June launch date including several important fundraising and community activities. Volunteers are needed for social media coordination, an entertainment committee for an April gala fundraiser at Helsinki Club, and corporate fundraising. Featured guest speaker: Mark Lytle, Author, Retired Professor of History at Bard College who will speak on the Environment and his forthcoming book, The All Consuming Nation which explores what He calls the Obama dilemma: how to jump-start a consumer-based economy in an age of global warming.

Bobby Previte's Blueprints. Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance. Rally in the Valley presents a benefit concert featuring The National and other local musicians to rally around affordable, accessible reproductive healthcare.

Bill Brovold is an educator, visual artist, and composer/musician. He has performed with Rhys Chatham, Arthur Russell, and Glenn Branca; and led the New York band Strange Farm (featuring Billy Ficca of Television and Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers) and the six-to-thirteen-member Detroit post rock band Larval, which features his twangy guitar alongside a wall-of-sound onslaught of horns and strings. He has released music on John Zorn’s Avant and Tzadik imprints and the Cuneiform, Knitting Factory, and RareNoise labels (a duet with Jamie Saft for the latter). His most recent releases, for the Public Eyesore label, see him paring down his sound for more intimate surroundings—closer to what he might do with a few friends in someone’s living room. Peter Aaron is a rock/noise/free improvising musician and author. He is the founder, lead vocalist, and guitarist of the influential New York band the Chrome Cranks, who have released albums on Crypt, PCP Entertainment, Au Go Go, Sympathy for the Record Industry, Bang!, HoZac, Thick Syrup, and other labels. His past projects include the hardcore bands Sand in the Face and Sluggo and the psychedelic guitar duo Avondale Airforce. Currently, he performs with Hudson Valley trio Young Skulls and with Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase in the free noise project Peter Aaron/Brian Chase Duo, whose debut album, Purges, appeared on the Public Eyesore label in 2016. The soundtrack he recorded with drummer Bobby Previte for the indie horror film The Furies Inside Me is set for release on Public Eyesore/Eh? in 2018. A multimedia performance of “Peace Be With You: Letters from Rap” with the Music Now! Unit. Theodore Burnett III performs music based on letters written by his father during deployment in Vietnam from 1968-1970. Funded in part by New Music USA. Ras Moshe Burnett is a native of Brooklyn NY, born on the 22nd of March 1968 into a family of musicians. He performs on the tenor sax, soprano sax and flute in the metropolitan area as well as performing as a ten year member of Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble. His paternal grandfather Theodore Burnett I (“Ted Barnett” professionally) performed on alto and tenor saxophones in the bands of Chick Webb, Lucky Millinder, Earl Bostic, Jimmy Mundy, Henri Woode, Don Redman, Benny Carter and Sister Rosetta Tharpe among others after his arrival from Jamaica in 1929. He can be viewed in early film footage performing with some of the orchestras listed. He wrote music for New Canaan Baptist Church in Brooklyn from the early 70’s to the early '90s. His father (Theodore Jacob Burnett II) played alto sax, and bass clarinet in the Brooklyn area throughout the '70s and '80s. He resumed musical activity from 2000 until his passing in 2014. Ras started music studies in the public schools from 5th grade throughout high school. He played with african drum groups and reggae bands from 1987 to the early 90’s before starting his own ensembles. He is a recent graduate with a B.A in music studies and preparing for a master’s program. He is a recently published poet, his poems being featured in The Metropolitan Review. He is the founder of the “Music Now!” series in 1999, a monthly presentation of jazz and new music initially at The Brecht Forum and currently extant at The Brooklyn Commons since 2011. WGXC is broadcasting this show from the signal of our partner station, WOOC-LP in Troy, New York.

Author reading and book signing of "The Legacy of Anne Frank" by Gillian Walnes Perry. Walnes Perry, co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust UK, explores the influence Anne Frank’s life and diary has had on young people all over the world. Refreshments follow the reading. The book will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the library thanks to Spotty Dog Books & Ale. The author will be available to sign copies. It will take place in the community room, which is wheelchair accessible.

Business education for farm women. A series of classes for women who are farm owners or managers or who anticipate moving into a decision-making position on a farm. This workshop focuses on managing land and the farm infrastructure. Participants will learn about leasing and owning land; assessing farmland quality; choosing infrastructure; farm taxes; other insurance and risk management tools for the farm. Columbia University’s Hudson Valley Initiative and Friends of Oakdale Lake invite the public to share feedback on “8 Design Ideas for Oakdale Lake." Using feedback gathered at the first public meeting on October 13, the HVI has broken a design concept into eight doable parts. The December 11 workshop is a part of the HVI’s Oakdale research and design planning project, which aims to develop a shared vision for the future of the lake. No previous teaching experience is necessary, only a love of reading, and a desire to share the gift of literacy. New volunteers are required to attend a free orientation session, and complete the training modules online, which can be adapted to fit most schedules. Trained volunteers are provided ongoing support as they work with students and classes. Our next Orientation Session will be held at the Hudson Area Library, Wednesday, December 12th from 3:30 – 5:30 pm. The follow-up session is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th 2019, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm at the same location. The work developed over the past three months by Urban Design students from Columbia University is displayed. We will be showing printed work and 11 short videos prepared by student teams exploring a range of topics - from the challenges of agriculture and the distribution of fresh produce, through the relationship between a small city like Hudson and its suburban and rural surroundings, to scenarios for the future of Hudson’s waterfront.
