Historic Audio from the Archives of Charles Ruas: Susan Howe and The Women's Distribution Group (Audio)

Nov 05, 2016
Produced by Clocktower Radio.
A 1977 conversation between poet and critic Susan Howe and a circle of New York City-based independent female publishers, Barbara Baracks, Maureen Owen, Fran Winant, Roberta Gould, and Marty Pottinger. The guests were all a part of a collective called The Women's Distribution Group organized to coalesce and strengthen outreach and readership. Each of their respected publications focused on distinct topics, such as politics, art, and gay and lesbian liberation. Howe, a venerated poet whose work is infused with historical and mythical references, was a regular producer at WBAI in the 1970s and worked closely alongside Charles Ruas. Image is from Joan Braderman's film about 70s feminist activism.
