Kaethe Hostetter (Audio)
The American violinist, composer, and bandleader Kaethe Hostetter (aka K8A), spent 11 years living in Ethiopia where she observed, studied, and embedded herself in the region’s musical and cultural traditions and practices. She is a founding member of the ensembles Debo Band and QWANQWA, blending Ethiopian musicians and instrumentation with Western tools and techniques, and touring the world. This recording, a solo performance at Roulette in April 2026 for live-looped 5-string violin and electronics, reflects her musical interpretations and transformations of Ethiopian musical scales, melodic systems, and even atmospheres all influenced by dub minimalism, psych abstraction, and avant improvisation. The concert marked the release of her album Woradj Alle (Impressions of Ethiopia).
