On this episode of the podcast, I dig into the work of the Post Present Medium record label. Started in 2001 in Los Angeles by Dean Spunt, the initial goal of Post Present Medium, as noted on their website: “was to put out music by friends that no one else wanted to put out, to have a label that supported a collection of people with a shared aesthetic and direction. It is inspired by growing up in the DIY community, obsessing over records, touring under questionable conditions, meeting rad bands, SST, and Dischord.” Aside from running Post Present Medium, Spunt would go on to play drums and sing in the critically acclaimed DIY art-punk band, No Age, in the ensuing years and who are still very much an active band putting out a terrific new album this year called People Helping People on Drag City Records, an album that finds the duo furthering their explorations into abstract realms while retaining their signature propulsive rock sound. I recently had a chance to chat with Dean about some of the history of Post Present Medium, some of the different inspirations and considerations that have gone into running the label for over 20 years, and some of the albums that he has put out in recent years. We also discussed the making of the new No Age album, as well as his latest collaborative album with John Weise. You’ll hear that interview in a few different segments throughout this show, and you’ll also hear selections from several Post Present Medium releases too. Hope you enjoy this episode! Feel free to get in touch if you have any comments or questions. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
