Wave Farm is delighted to announce that Tyler Maxin will serve as a 2022/2023 Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow. During his engagement, Maxin will make additions to the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource, and to the syndicated weekly radio show "The Radio Art Hour." Maxin will also conduct workshops and listening sessions with WGXC programmers and interested members of the public, and create original radio artworks for broadcast.

Tyler Maxin is a researcher and curator based in Brooklyn, New York. He is the Communications and Special Projects Associate at Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), a leading resource for video and media art. In 2022, he co-curated "Jerry Hunt: Transmissions from the Pleroma" at Blank Forms, New York, a multi-pronged initiative that included an exhibition of the late composer's sculptural objects and video work, a series of record reissues, the publication of Stephen Housewright's biographical memoir Partners, and a 368-page journal surveying Hunt's life and career. Maxin's writing has appeared in publications including Artforum, BOMB, Hotel, and Screen Slate.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must be a high school senior, college freshmen, or college sophomore during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Stipend: $2,400
Time commitment: 24 days total; June - August (to be scheduled in conjunction with the successful applicant.)
Location: This position is based at the Wave Farm Study Center in Acra, NY. Housing is not provided, and independent transportation is necessary.

Wave Farm is pleased to announce a Summer Internship opportunity focused on Wave Farm’s Transmission Arts programs and made possible by The LeRoy Neiman and Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation Summer Internships support to Rethinking Residencies. This is a unique opportunity for an individual to gain hands-on experience with a non-profit media arts organization, with a focus on support for our international artists residency program, digital archives, and public programming. Applicants should possess enthusiasm for transmission and media arts, and be interested in an immersive experience working directly with artists and the inner workings of a non-profit arts organization.

The Wave Farm Summer Intern will support the following programs:

• Wave Farm Artists Residency Program (assistance, interviews, documentation)
• Wave Farm Study Center Library and Archives
• Public Programs and Tours (including Upstate Art Weekend, Audio Buffet, and WGXC 90.7-FM broadcasts)

Founded in Brooklyn, NY, in 1997, as a microradio artists’ collective creating works for radio transmission, in 2002, Wave Farm became a non-profit arts organization focused on cultivating Transmission Arts, or artists’ experiments with broadcast media and the airwaves. Transmission art is generally a participatory live-art or time-based art, and often is made manifest as radio art, video art, installation, and performance.

Based in New York’s Upper Hudson Valley (Acra, NY) since 2004, Wave Farm is a non-profit arts organization driven by experimentation with broadcast media and the airwaves. Wave Farm’s Residency Program provides artists working within the Transmission Arts genre opportunities to research and create new works. Wave Farm’s Archives document and contextualize this work, including the Wave Farm Radio Art Archive, which is a project of an annual fellowship program. The Transmission Art Installation park features long-term projects installed on Wave Farm’s 29-acres in Acra, NY. These projects amplify the environment revealing what is otherwise unheard or unseen. Wave Farm’s WGXC-FM is a full-power, non-commercial, listener-supported station in New York’s Upper Hudson Valley.

During their engagement, Ekpunobi will make additions to the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource, and to the syndicated weekly radio show "The Radio Art Hour." Ekpunobi will also conduct workshops and listening sessions with WGXC programmers and interested members of the public, and create an original radio artwork for broadcast.

Iru Ekpunobi is a deep listener, DJ, and audiofuturist. A recent graduate of New York University, Ekpunobi began their journey in FM radio as an DJ and show host at WNYU 89.1-FM, where they synthesized Black musicology, revolutionary history, and futurist transmission on a weekly, 90-minute broadcast. Culminating in their undergraduate thesis, Ekpunobi launched Third Space Radio, a digital media project and community radio station exploring sonic transmission as a ‘third place’ where community, education, and love can persist.

Currently, Ekpunobi is re-establishing their identity independent of academic institutions, researching percussion as communication throughout the Black sonic diaspora and working as a podcast producer. Connection welcomed at iruekpunobi.com, and @iruirl on instagram.

The Radio Preservation Task Force of the Library of Congress is pleased to announce a major conference to be held April 27-30 on Capitol Hill at the Madison Building of the Library of Congress, and at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.

The conference is titled “A Century of Broadcasting: Preservation and Renewal” and features talks and panels with more than 350 archivists, radio and television historians, artists, information scientists, journalists, curators, sound studies scholars, broadcasters and others highlighting how preservation contributes to the history and creation of mass media at community, local, national and international levels.
