Spanning August 2019 - February 2020, Wave Farm's "Radio for Open Ears" workshops were weekly sessions held with the 16- and 17-year-old youth incarcerated in the Hudson Correctional Facility in conjunction with "Raise the Age" legislation. Each week the Wave Farm team (pictured above) including Kamal Johnson, Adolfo Lopez, and Galen Joseph-Hunter brought audio equipment inside the Facility where the youth received hand-on access and experience, learning how to express themselves through sound and radio as a creative medium. The program was made possible by CreativityWorksNYS, an initiative of the New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with Carnegie Hall, and in collaboration with the New York State Department of Corrections. The primary goal of CreativityWorksNYS is to engage youth who are justice involved through arts enrichment projects in a variety of creative disciplines. Young people learn new skills, express their creative voices, and develop positive peer and adult relationships through collaborative arts projects. Wave Farm is delighted to announce our first Radio Artist Fellow selected from a competitive national open call.

Karen Werner is a radio artist and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe, North America, Australia and Israel and have been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice. Werner produces the creative radio sonic zine Sketchpad, broadcast weekly on WMCB 107.9lpfm in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and she teaches workshops on radio art, radio autoethnography and politics of storytelling. She is on the faculty of the BFA in Socially Engaged Art Program at Goddard College in Vermont. karenwerner.net

The fellow will develop an audio archive of noteworthy historic and contemporary radio artworks including brief introductory and contextual information for publication on the Wave Farm website. Drawing from the archive, produce approximately five hours of radio art programming weekly on Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM. The fellow will also create original radio artworks for broadcast and lead three workshops and/or listening sessions with WGXC’s volunteer programmers.

This includes “environmental” broadcasting, sound mapping, and the development of new “transmission ecologies” making links between very local projects in urban, rural, and peri-urban areas. It also refers to a work in progress which invites people to open places as sites for listening. While in residence, the artists will set up a new permanent live audio stream, placing environmental sounds from the Wave Farm property in the public domain, and designate it as an experimental site of of the Acoustic Commons (AC Experimental Site 0_). A newly designed streambox will be installed to transmit the sounds to a live soundmap at Locus Sonus (locusonus.org/soundmap). Drawings on paper and online and a booklet (working title: (un)Manifest(o) for Acoustic Commoning) will document the project.

Grant Smith is an artist and writer working on sound, transmission, text, domestic and social projects in Loughborough Junction, South London. He co-founded the Soundcamp cooperative, and maintains a long term project at self-noise.net, which documents the mundane and ephemeral. Current activities include The Acoustic Commons, a project and 'wild concept' dedicated to sharing environmental sounds.

Sam Baraitser Smith is a graphic designer and musician. He has been studying graphics and communication at Central St Martins, London and School of Visual Arts, New York. As a member of Art Assassins at South London Gallery, he has collaborated with Tenderlonious, Erik van Lieshout, and Thomas Hirschhorn. Sam has worked with Soundcamp to develop graphic representations of sound and place.

Joint projects include The Acoustic Commons (acousticommons.net), a series of radio programmes for Resonance Extra, each accompanied by a drawing and a description. The Wave Farm residency will be a chance to extend this collaboration.

Wave Farm is delighted to announce our first Radio Artist Fellow selected from a competitive national open call.

Karen Werner is a radio artist and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe, North America, Australia and Israel and have been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice. Werner produces the creative radio sonic zine Sketchpad, broadcast weekly on WMCB 107.9lpfm in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and she teaches workshops on radio art, radio autoethnography and politics of storytelling. She is on the faculty of the BFA in Socially Engaged Art Program at Goddard College in Vermont. karenwerner.net

Beginning September 2019, the Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellowship is nine-month, part-time engagement for an American radio artist with strong interests in the history of radio art and related practices. The Fellow will work closely with Wave Farm’s Executive Director, Galen Joseph-Hunter, and Artistic Director, Tom Roe, and will communicate regularly with Fellowship Mentors: Anna Friz, Joan Schuman, and Gregory Whitehead.

The fellow will develop an audio archive of noteworthy historic and contemporary radio artworks including brief introductory and contextual information for publication on the Wave Farm website. Drawing from the archive, produce approximately five hours of radio art programming weekly on Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM. The fellow will also create original radio artworks for broadcast and lead three workshops and/or listening sessions with WGXC’s volunteer programmers.

The Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellowship is made possible, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Acoustic Commons describes a range of work that deals with the close association between sounds and places. This includes “environmental” broadcasting, sound mapping, and the development of new “transmission ecologies” making links between very local projects in urban, rural, and peri-urban areas. It also refers to a work in progress which invites people to open places as sites for listening. While in residence, the artists will set up a new permanent live audio stream, placing environmental sounds from the Wave Farm property in the public domain, and designate it as an experimental site of of the Acoustic Commons (AC Experimental Site 0_). A newly designed streambox will be installed to transmit the sounds to a live soundmap at Locus Sonus (locusonus.org/soundmap). Drawings on paper and online and a booklet (working title: (un)Manifest(o) for Acoustic Commoning) will document the project.

Grant Smith is an artist and writer working on sound, transmission, text, domestic and social projects in Loughborough Junction, South London. He co-founded the Soundcamp cooperative, and maintains a long term project at self-noise.net, which documents the mundane and ephemeral. Current activities include The Acoustic Commons, a project and 'wild concept' dedicated to sharing environmental sounds.

Sam Baraitser Smith is a graphic designer and musician. He has been studying graphics and communication at Central St Martins, London and School of Visual Arts, New York. As a member of Art Assassins at South London Gallery, he has collaborated with Tenderlonious, Erik van Lieshout, and Thomas Hirschhorn. Sam has worked with Soundcamp to develop graphic representations of sound and place.

Joint projects include The Acoustic Commons (acousticommons.net), a series of radio programmes for Resonance Extra, each accompanied by a drawing and a description. The Wave Farm residency will be a chance to extend this collaboration.

Spanning August 2019 - February 2020, Wave Farm's "Radio for Open Ears" workshops were weekly sessions held with the 16- and 17-year-old youth incarcerated in the Hudson Correctional Facility in conjunction with "Raise the Age" legislation. Each week the Wave Farm team (pictured above) including Kamal Johnson, Adolfo Lopez, and Galen Joseph-Hunter brought audio equipment inside the Facility where the youth received hand-on access and experience, learning how to express themselves through sound and radio as a creative medium. "The level of engagement, thoughtfulness, and talent these young men and women possess has exceeded anything we could have imagined or hoped to encounter.
