Tune into WGXC 90.7-FM for a special live broadcast featuring visting AIRtime artist Judy Dunaway. Judy Dunaway presents two hours of transmission art for WGXC, featuring live performances by area artists and live telematic collaborations. Saxophonist Chris Kelsey will present the U.S. premiere of Judy Dunaway's composition "On The Air" for saxophone, balloon samples and radio static. Electronic musician Doug Van Nort of Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute will collaborate with Dunaway in an improvisation of processed of live signals. Improvising vocalists Jill Burton of Gainesville, Florida and Richard Curtis of Huntsville, Alabama will participate via phone presenting special Hudson-area-based texts. (Kelsey, Van Nort, Burton and Curtis have worked with Dunaway in the past year in various telematic collaborations transmitted over Blogtalkradio.com.) Additionally, students from Pauline Oliveros' Fall 2011 "Deep Listening" class at RPI will be phoning in sounds live throughout the broadcast.

Dunaway will also speak about her previous works involving radio, phones and internet sound, and play some excerpts from these project.

Judy Dunaway is a composer, improvisor and conceptual artist who is primarily known for her sound works for latex balloons. Since 1990 Judy Dunaway has composed over thirty works for balloons as instruments and has also made this her main instrument for improvisation. She has performed this work throughout North America and Europe and has received numerous grants for her work. Her discography includes CDs on the CRI and Innova labels. She has also produced many lesser-known transmission art works (many of which do not use balloons), and was recently included in Galen Joseph-Hunter's book "Transmission Arts."

Chris Kelsey is a writer and saxophonist living in Dutchess County, NY. Chris contributes regularly to Jazz.com and JazzTimes. He’s recorded sev eral albums, most recently Not Cool ( … as in, ‘The Opposite of Paul Desmond’) for his own Tzazz Kry tyk label. He’s also recorded several albums for the the CIMP label.

Doug Van Nort is an experimental musician and digital music researcher whose work is dedicated to sound exploration through composition, improvisation, installation, interactive system design, curation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Van Nort is a member of the improvisational trio Triple Point with Pauline Oliveros and Jonas Braasch, wherein he plays his custom GREIS software designed for on-the-fly spectral and textural sound transformations. This group also collaborates through research and teaching, and in this context Van Nort has been actively designing and creating an intelligent system for improvisation, currently as research associate in music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Jill Burton is a singular and extraordinary performance artist, vocalist, dancer and energy worker who has been consciously synthesizing her art form for over 40 years. With an extensive background in many traditional and modern music and dance techniques, she has always held a special interest in experimental performance and free improvisation. She has also studied and practiced many bodywork, energy work and spiritual healing modalities, always incorporating these with her performance work. Jill lived in Sitka, Alaska for 6 years, where she was honored to provide musical accompaniment for Tlingit storyteller/shamans.

Richard Curtis has developed extended vocal techniques drawing on a range of influences such as jazz, sound art, Dada sound poetry, experimental improv music, Foley sound effects, environmental sounds and ethnopoetics. He has studied traditional vocal techniques with the Zulu and Maasai people in Africa. He has an MFA from the School of the Art Institute.

"All That Is Solid Melts Into Air" (Radia Version) is a transmission work produced for the Radia Network by Brett Ian Balogh, and is an extension of the work done for Maximilian Goldfarb's Deep Cycle (2010). The piece is composed of a series of maps that trace a path through all Radia Network stations in Europe. The maps are then encoded to sound through a protocol for transmission of images over radio known as slow-scan television, or SSTV (in this case, Robot 72s Color). The piece re-interprets the solid as air through the processes of encoding, transmitting, receiving and decoding the map. Through this process, the physical and imagined boundaries depicted on the map become distorted through their interaction with the actual space they intend to represent.

Balogh is a Chicago-based artist working at the intersection of objects, sounds and spaces. He received his Masters of Fine Arts in Studio from the Department of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his Bachelor in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology, teaching courses in architecture, computer-aided design and manufacturing, do-it-yourself broadcasting and acoustics. Brett is also a free103point9 transmission artist and a 2009-2010 free103point9 Airtime fellow.

The Radia Network includes WGXC (via free103point9) and emerged from a series of meetings, clandestine events, late night club discussions and a lot of email exchanges between cultural radio producers across Europe. The topics vary and the reasons for forming a network are many, but Radia has become a concrete manifestation of the desire to use radio as an art form. The approaches differ, as do the local contexts; from commissioned radio art works to struggles for frequencies to copyright concerns, all the radios share the goal of an audio space where something different can happen. That different is also a form in the making – radio sounds different in each city, on each frequency. Taking radio as an art form, claiming that space for creative production in the mediascape and cracking apart the notion of radio is what Radia does. It is producing radio stuff that is hard to describe. Some of it can be labeled radio art, or experimental radio, or creative radio. Sometimes it talks, sometimes it doesn’t. It can be noisy, or a kind of soundscape, or a documentary, a document, a talk, a performance. Each and every week, one of the partners will provide the network program, commissioned and produced especially for this purpose : being broadcast by all the partners and made available online. Some things have to be said about all those partners. They are radio stations, of the independent, non-commercial, community, cultural species. They all speak different languages, and this should create interesting problems. Although initially they were all European radio stations this has changed over time and Radia has become not only larger but also more diverse: 20 partners in 13 countries and growing all the time. "Radia" airs on WGXC every Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Columbia Council Council on the Arts (Columbia County, NY) celebrates three years of free literary programming with a gala cocktail party, dubbed "Meet the Writers". The event honors the 34 past and present participants in the reading series, which since 2009 has drawn increasingly high-profile writers to venues throughout Columbia County, NY. This event is a benefit for the series and other literary activities sponsored by the Council

A special edition of the WGXC Saturday Afternoon Show featuring artists Alexis Bhagat and Tianna Kennedy.

Alexis Bhagat's work is dedicated to the destruction of authorship and authority through the cultivation of new forms for radically poly-vocal sound, transmission of promiscuous conversation, and obsessive never-ending correspondence. Currently, Bhagat is intrigued by the "lecture" as a form ripe for intervention. He speaks and writes on anarchism, prisons, and sound art, and is a founding member of the August Sound Coalition.

Kennedy’s experiments in transmission began as a logical extension of her literary and cello career as monthly improvisatory radio broadcasts in Bushwick, Brooklyn in 2003. Kennedy was a founding member of the August Sound Coalition, an autonomous media project, which, in one manifestation, created a popular Art and Action Radio station coincident with the 2004 Republican National Convention. She was also a founding member of the Empty Vessel Project, an Action, Art and Design Center fostering projects focused on Sustainable Living in Urban Landscapes, as well as Project Manager for SWOON's ambitious Swimming Cities adventure in the Adriatic Sea. Most recently Kennedy has been living in Delaware County New York in a town called Bovina Center and working on a farm in Hamden.

Radius Sketchpad is an ongoing monthly program on WGXC 90.7-FM presented by the Chicago-based platform, Radius. This month features Sturqen’s Foradius, and is followed by a playlist of works selected by the artists.

Presenting two very different explorations of simulated environments: These examples consider the impact of constructing controlled site profiles, visual and auditory, to augment the understanding and experience of perceived phenomena in the simulated or reconstructed environments in which we spend an increasing amount of our time. Featuring Jon Rafman’s, Kool-aid Man in Second Life & The Sonicave Wave Stimulus Engine.
