This program, features water-themed works as a special preview event for SnowFlow, a collaboration between organizations interested in creativity, sustainability and organizational awareness, taking place February 11-13, 2011 at Full Moon Resort and Belleayre Mountain.

All sounds featured in this special broadcast were part of EMF’s annual festival, Ear to the Earth. 2010’s topic was Water and the World, and each work is about understanding the current states of water in the world. Through their sounds composers direct attention to drinkable water, melting ice, rising sea levels, polluted rivers, storm intensity, salinity and more. But most of all each work celebrates the purity of water, and inspires listeners to ask what they can do to preserve our most vital resource.

SnowFlow: Artists, Naturalists and Concerned Citizens come together for a Winter Celebration of Pure Water in the Central Catskills, February 11-13, 2011. With performances from Pauline Oliveros; Miguel Frasconi; and Tianna Kennedy and Hannah Marcus live on WGXC 9 p.m. to midnight.

SnowFlow will be held at both the Belleayre Ski Mountain and Full Moon Resort within the forest preserve of Catskill State Park. This location is geographically significant in relation to the NYC watershed as well as the headwaters to the Delaware River, recently declared the nation's most endangered river. SnowFlow is the winter version of the floating river conference, FlowSlow, which took place in September, 2010. The events will combine art, music, performance and conversations to creatively produce a variety of works that raise awareness of the critical water issues threatening our region. Skiers will cascade down the slopes of Belleayre Mountain, a parallel artistic public intervention of this winter carnival, simultaneously occurring as the snow shelter building competition unfolds at the Full Moon Resort. Matt Bua will be making a snow house. Events will be linked via the airwaves with broadcasts from free103point9’s WGXC. SnowFlow will continue into the evening with a public reception dinner and panel discussions, exploring Peak Water and regional Catskill Foodshed initiatives, followed by performances curated by the Electronic Music Foundation and ISSUE Project Room. SnowFlow concludes Sunday with a pure water blessing and a snow shelter juried-award ceremony.

Our antenna has been hung, our transmitter is near-completion, and the wheels are in-motion for our studio to transmitter link. We are working on periodic broadcasts to test our FM-signal, but starting on February 26 WGXC will be officially on your FM-dial.

WGXC has come so far in the past few years, with the hands-on help of countless volunteers and supporters. WGXC’s programmers are now broadcasting their shows live on our webstream. Our News Team is producing local news reports everyday for our Newsroom blog and daily news shows. Volunteers have been working hard to finish building the station’s Hudson studio, and are drawing plans and building mock-ups for our studio at the Catskill Community Center. The Wave Farm Study Center, which will house our Cairo Studio, is nearing completion. It's time to celebrate!

Saturday, February 26, Catskill's Main Street is also host to "Masters on Main Street." This exciting project offers ten contemporary exhibitions from students and recent alumni of studio art programs near and far. Exhibitions include fresh talent from the School of Visual Arts, SUNY New Paltz, Bard College, School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Vassar College lining Main Street in Catskill's vacant storefronts. Tune-in at 90.7-FM or on wgxc.org for a special live performance by free103point9 Transmission Artists Laura Ortman and Bryan Zimmerman, who perform as solo performers and as part of a band called The Dust Dive. The last Dust Dive album was produced by Sebadoh's Jason Lowenstein. They come from Brooklyn, NY to the WGXC Hudson studio to perform.

"Your appreciation may very well pivot on how you feel about the vocals: telescoped layers of radioed-in voices that foreground (and even obscure) Zimmerman’s winding, circular prose. Opaque vocal production and a reluctance to conform lyrics to any sort of metrical or melodic structure contributes to the diaristic and timeless (in the “time is barely moving” sense of the word) tenor of the record. This is not to say the vocals (think Thurston Moore doing Syd Barrett), while lyrically-driven, lack musical lyricism. What’s remarkable to me is that the songs achieve an essentially literary/poetic effect through musical technique. Throughout, the simultaneous lyrical threads come to engender a sort of punk-folk motet, giving props to the abstractions attendant to the act of memory. Zimmerman creates linguistic dirt bike paths through tall-grass prairies, touring backyard forts and vagrant mental monuments commemorating the sublimated tools and leavings of a Midwestern exurban childhood desire: hand-fashioned crawdad fishing tools, midnight tailgating parties, gagging on the smell of perfume/makeup in church, Playboys stolen from dad's shed, Suzuki crotch-rockets, plastic ghetto blasters with AC/DC and Run DMC tapes, tadpoles with extra digits. We are given an endless inventory of artifacts and a quietly unfolding obsession to connect the dots to nothing (but not Nothing) in particular, bitter-sweetly celebrating an un-zoned freedom of manageably human scale.
