From Zachary Watkins. Field recordings, organ, tape loops and tuned feed back. Computer noise, piano and 60Hz. hum. Recorded time and place, with overlapping memories and a dangerous bamboo stick fight. Zachary Watkins studied composition at Cornish College and Electronic Music at Mills College. Zachary was awarded a Mills Research Grant and was recently awarded the Paul Merritt Henry Prize for Composition for his piece Suite for String Quartet. He has been commissioned by clarinetist Beth Fleenor, Cornish College of the Arts, Trio Metrik and the sFSoundGroup. Zachary recently performed at the 2006 International Computer Music Conference with his band The Pink Canoes. During October of 2006, Zachary was an artist in residence at the Espy Foundation.

A night of free radio and free music: free103point9 transmission artist Anna Friz favours instruments that breathe and oscillate; employing accordion, concertina, harmonica, theremin, radio samples, ambient field recordings, and voice to conjure unusual sonic spaces. For Chicago sound artist Eric Leonardson instruments lie in the detritus of everyday life. He employs a self-made instrument that he calls the Springboard, an electroacoustic percussion instrument made from inexpensive and readily available materials. Joining them will be a duo with legendary saxophonist Jack Wright and percussionist Andrew Drury. Members of the NYSAE, Edmund Mooney, Andrea William and Andrea Callard will play field recordings. Performances will be streamed live on free103point9 Online Radio.

ANNA FRIZ is a sound and radio artist who divides her time between Montreal and Toronto. Since 1998 she has predominantly created self-reflexive radio art for broadcast, installation or performance, where radio is the source, subject, and medium of the work. She also employs instruments and electronics to create dynamic, atmospheric works equally able to reflect upon public media culture or to reveal interior landscapes. Anna is a free103point9 transmission artists. ERIC LEONARDSON has been performing in Chicago since 1982. He creates sound for theater, film, and live performance with an invented instrument he calls the Springboard. Jack Wright and Andrew Drury
JACK WRIGHT has been a bold saxophonist, originally focused on free jazz and now largely using the instrument simply to create sound. Either on tour or organizing the next one, he has played in virtually every venue available to experimental improvised music in the US, and many in Europe as well. In 1982 he began Spring Garden Music as a vehicle for organizing an improvisational music community, and he currently plays with about fifty partners in Europe and the US. As a musical explorer his music ranges widely in vocabulary, depending on the situation and partners, yet always somehow identifiable as his own. These days he is playing mostly alto and soprano saxophones, in every possible direction, sometimes even recognizable as such. He lives in Easton, which enables him to commute easily to NYC and Phila. He is also increasingly active in Europe, touring both sides of the Atlantic with European musicians. Jarrad Powell is a composer whose work involves a variety of media, including chamber music, music for theater and dance, and sound installation. Powell is an Associate Professor at Cornish College of the Arts and is also Director of Gamelan Pacifica in Seattle. Jarrad Powell has an interest in the music of Asia, and is especially noted for his work with gamelan. He was born in Montana in 1948 and studied music from an early age, including piano, percussion, and guitar. He received his M.A. in music composition from Mills College, where he studied with Anthony Braxton, Conlon Nancarrow, David Rosenboom, Pauline Oliveros and Larry Polansky and received the prestigious Paul M. Henry Award for excellence in music composition. He has also studied Javanese gamelan extensively with a number of teachers, including K.R.T. Wasitodiningrat, Endo Suando, Antonius Sutrisna, Supardi, and Sri Djoko Rahardja. Mr. Powell has been a faculty member at Cornish College of the Arts since 1987, where he is currently Associate Professor. He is also Director of Gamelan Pacifica, Artistic Director of the Seattle Creative Orchestra, and co-director of Composer/Choreographer: new dialogues dance, music, media. He has recorded for What Next? Recordings, Periplus, Mode Records, New Albion, O.O. Discs, and the Leonardo Music Journal.

Radio Ruido hosts this show live from Brooklyn, often with guest turntablists.

The final presentation of the Rome stop on the Summer 2007 tour of the Subliminal History of New York State, shape note singing and story telling of truer than true stories about Rome, NY.

Tonight's guest composer, Stephen Fandrich, presents "Polos" for piano. "Polos" is made of harmonies and gestures inspired by the concept of harmonic space. Stephen Fandrich is a piano soloist, improviser and composer as a member of the group Monktail Creative Music Concern, as well as a vocalist and overtone singer as a member of Gamelan Pacifica. He is also founder and director of the Seattle Harmonic Voices.

free103point9: Selected Works
A video compilation featuring selected recordings from ten years of free103point9 archives. Compiled and edited by Giancarlo Bracchi.

Join us in celebrating Sing Sun Room coinciding with Tune(Out)))side 2007.

The inaugural work in the Wave Farm Sculpture Garden, Sing Sun ­ Room is an interactive sound sculpture and installation by artist Matt Bua. The project employs an existing mobile home located on the Wave Farm property and creates a custom addition or outgrowth, which functions as a gazebo space that harnesses various elements (wind, water, and solar) in order to transfer them into sound. Wind: Part of the structure wall will be built with embedded whistle technologies, which react to various amounts of wind. Sections of the walls may be opened and closed in order to control or ?play? thematic groupings such as Unison pitches and specific tones.  

Water/Rain: Water/Rain: By devising an acoustic system, which reacts to rain fall, the structure will have a precipitation-reactive voice.

Solar/Sun: The exterior of the structure will be outfitted with custom solar panels; the energy collected will be translated into sound. This technology is based on the solar inventions of Nikola Tesla, who is credited along with Guiglielmo Marconi as having invented radio.Other sounds will be made using experiments of Alessandro Volta, Michael Faraday and others. 

During the planning and construction process Bua will meet with a group of local teens interested in contemporary art and renewable energy practices. Through a series of workshops, the group will learn about individual expression while working collaboratively on visual and sound-based art.

Special guest Che Chen (of True Primes) will perform a DJ set this week on Radio Ruido's "Triangulation."
Che Chen is one half of the band, True Primes, as well as a solo performer who uses stringed instruments, winds, reeds, tape machines, synthesizers, film projections and generally whatever's handy in works heavily influenced by his interest in ritual and folk musics from around the world. True Primes, his duo with singer/percussionist, Rolyn Hu, has an album called We Have Won out on Locust, and Chen has an artist's book due out on the Phaserprone imprint this summer. He is also the editor of O Sirhan, O Sirhan , a private press zine devoted to the presentation of artist's archival materials ranging from musical scores and writings to photographs, drawings, films and videos. OSOS also features interviews and articles on artists and musicians that have so far included Henry Flynt, Jorge Boehringer, Bruce McClure, Mary Halvorson, Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Edie Tsong, Sir Richard Bishop, Mark Gergis, and others. O Sirhan, O Sirhan #2 zine+DVD is due out in Fall of 2007.
