free103point9 is a non-profit arts organization focused on establishing and cultivating Transmission Arts. This genre includes experimental practices in radio art, video art, light sculpture, and installation and performance utilizing the electromagnetic spectrum. free103point9 was originally founded in 1997 as a microcasting artist collective in Brooklyn, NY, where its mobile operations made airtime available to community voices, local bands, and most significantly to a group of under-served artists shaping conceptual works specifically for radio transmission.

“Transmission Arts” is a conceptual umbrella that unites a community of artists and audiences interested in transmission ideas and tools. Transmission practices harness, occupy and/or respond to the airwaves that surround us. There is an inherent “liveness” to this work. In a performance-based setting, audience members are newly engaged, becoming participants rather than passive viewers and listeners. Installation or sculptural transmission works are often dependant on the present, reacting to whatever occupies the surrounding frequencies in a single instance, or changing that information by adding new signals to the spectral environment.

Wave Farm, free103point9's upstate New York location is located on 30 pastoral acres in the northern foothills of Catskill Mountain Park, 33 miles northwest of Bard. Wave Farm programs include artist residencies, a study center, a transmission sculpture garden, and a outdoor summer performance and exhibition series.

Guiding free103point9's transition to a nonprofit organization, Galen Joseph-Hunter has served as Executive Director since 2002. Simultaneously, she has worked at the venerable video art organization Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) since 1996. Over the past ten years, she has organized numerous exhibitions and events internationally including "Video Jam" (2001), co-curated with Michael Rush, at the PBICA, FL; "Video Windows" (2001) at the Stefan Stux Gallery, NY; "Interactions" (2002), co-curated with Lori Zippay, at the NY Center for Media Arts; "Memory of Temptations" (2002) at EdiciónMadrid, Spain; "The Workshop of the Film Form, 1970-77" (2004), co-curated with Lukasz Ronduda, EAI, NY; "Airborne" (2005) in collaboration with and at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; "Spectral Garden" (2006) free103point9 Wave Farm, Acra, NY; and "[silence]" (2007), co-curated with Dylan J. On Sunday, April 22nd, artist Matt Bua will present the first of a series of workshops in conjunction with his forthcoming installation "Sing Sun -Room" for the Wave Farm Transmission Sculpture Garden. Made possible by Artists & Communities, a program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Bua will work with a group of local middle and high-school students to create elements for his interactive sound sculpture installation. In this first meeting Bua will introduce the students to the "Sing Sun - Room" project, speak about his artistic practice, and present past work. The workshop will be streamed (audio and video) on the free103point website. Special thanks to Dharma Dailey and Barbara Rovitz for facilitating the student participation for this project.

Transformation: Every spy must learn how to undergo an effective, convincing transformation through lies and deceit in order to accomplish a mission. Set in 1944 at Camp X, Canada's infamous wartime spy training ground, this 30 minute radio drama is a featured highlight of the opening show of the Deep Wireless festival.

DO NOT DO THIS EVER AGAIN by Karinne Keithley. A video adaptation of a freestanding operetta from Do Not Do This Ever Again. The operetta materializes Marie Antoinette and Esme the Cat in Maine, as they wander about nothingness and listen to the deer sing.

CONVERSATIONS FOR YOU AND ME by Rachelle Knowles with text by Jenny Levison. Visual artist Knowles knocks experiment off its pedestal with playwright Levison in a page-based response to the festival's mission.

DISCO EATS ITSELF by Tan Lin with Flash design by Danielle Aubert. A text transforms into a disco, with its seamless flow of all-night, 4-to-the-floor grooves. Poet Tan Lin conjures a theatrical synaesthesia as a disco video track plays against live performers and an animated text.

LEARNING SKILLS PROGRAM by Johanna Linsley directed by Katrina Bugaj. Learning Skills Program provides a gently insistent overview of one current approach to Particular Algebra. Objectives include: lightly drifting from categorized levels of abstraction, observing mathematical operators and intuiting concrete solutions. All levels welcome.

OVER THE GARDEN WALL by Ruth Margraff directed by Brooke O'Harra. A drawing-room theatrical version with the whole of the stage business built right in, or high art for amateurs. Guaranteed performable by any amateur anywhere. No rehearsal necessary.

COPY 8852 by Jason Szalla Copy 8852 is an alcohol fueled, candy flavored transcribed, circum-conversation about River Phoenix, Pop Culture, and Contemporary Art. Anonymity will be the new celebrity. Now and then in the Viper Room a museum can be found .

Gallery 1313 and two other locations will host simultaneous radio art performances by Stephen Kelly, Eleanor King, Anna Friz and Michelle Irving and live from Japan via the internet Tetsuo Kogawa and company.

Noise! is a sound performance festival started in 2005. This year free103point9 curates. Each year the "Incubator" program at Ontological Theater hosts a Noise! festival, a three-night multi-arts event designed to promote interest in new forms of sound art. The festival will feature short compositions and performances by established and emerging artists.

Each evening opens with a Radio 4x4 as the audience enters the theater. Radio 4x4 is a collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters to radios positioned throughout a performance space. Each radio receives only one of the signals, so that the audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals.

Maria Chavez
Born in Lima, Peru in 1980, Maria Chavez grew up in Austin and lived in Houston from the age of 10. She became a club DJ at the age of 17, and eventually met her mentor David Dove (Director of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation-Houston) who convinced her to improvise on the turntables and since then has been totally dedicated to improvised music. Maria has a degree in Audio Engineering and is working full time on her experimental music. She calls it "improvised/abstract turntabilism", and it consists of all electro-acoustic sounds from only vinyl and needle. She melts and mutates all forms of vinyl and has a collection of 8 broken styluses (and counting) that all get different sounds.

Gunung Sari: Gunung Sari is an experimental electronic noise duo composed of Nick Lesley and Stanley Ruiz, based in Brooklyn, New York. The name means "Mountain's Essence" in Bahasa Indonesia - a tribute to their love of Gamelan music and the ceremonies and rituals that go along with it. Their music is a hybrid of improvised electronics bordering on noise. They use analog electronics, homebrew rudimentary synths, handcrafted wearable noisemakers, hacked radios, and percussions. At times they also do live audio-video processing using the computer.

Bruce McClure: Filmmaker Bruce McClure does some unbelievable things with projectors. Using small perforated metal plates, film loops, specially modified projectors (up to four at a time), and other tinkered bits, McClure creates abstracted Rorschachs of light and dark, Rothko-like patterns and textures, swirling and pulsing shapes and shadows, and other visual phantasmagoria which will please the eye and boggle the brain. His work has been screened at the Whitney Biennial, the London Film Festival, the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and many other venues and festivals around the U.S. and Europe.
