Composer and trombonist Christopher McIntyre has been developing a number of large ensemble projects in the past few years, both as a leader and collaborator. Several of them will fill Roulette\'s stage during this event, including TILT Brass Band, Lotet and Ne(x)tworks. A thread that carries through each group is both technical and spiritual: mapping the space between composition and improvisation. In the process of making pieces for these bands, an immersive and colorful aesthetic has emerged in McIntyre\'s work.

Tonight\'s program offers a full evening of this repertoire, as well as new works commissioned by Roulette with support from the Jerome Foundation and performed by an impressive array of new music�s heaviest-hitters, including Joan La Barbara, Cornelius Dufallo, Miguel Frasconi, Peter Evans and Nate Wooley.

The first half of the performance features scores written for the composer/performer band Ne(x)tworks. The set includes the premiere of Herkimer, a hybrid multimedia score of cellular and strategic notation. Ne(x)tworks is Joan La Barbara (voice,) Stephen Gosling (piano,) Kenji Bunch (viola,) Yves Dharamraj (cello,) Cornelius Dufallo & Ariana Kim (violins,) Shelley Burgon (harp,) Miguel Frasconi (glass instruments,) Peter Evans (trumpet) and McIntyre (trombone.) free103point9's Tianna Kennedy will assist with the technical infrastructure of the piece.

Members of the McIntyre-led ensembles TILT Brass Band and Lotet, along with some very special guests, join forces on the second half to perform a set of isomorphic musical structures. Grouped in pairs, the instrumentation on hand fuses the timbral bliss of TILT with the low frequency undulations of Lotet\'s live-electronics. A Theory of Meaning
How is it that we see something when we hear something? How does language actually _work_? This is a miracle I can barely understand when an actual person is speaking to me: I hear a series of noises which activate my imagination, see things that aren't there, empathize with people that I can't see (or don't even exist). On the radio it's even more perplexing. There is no visible speaker, utterances emerge from a machine in one's living room, but yet we follow a story, imagine a person who utters these mysterious noises we call language, and understand their ideas. With no human contact, language, a force larger than we are, works.

"A Theory of Meaning" is a radio play for speakers who don't exist.

Art’s Birthday 2007: Adore and be still. 100 years of radio

free103point9 will air two web streams: one will pick up the entire Kunstradio "Art's Birthday Party" feed, and another will simultaenously air a feed from various free103point9 Transmission Artists to contribute to Kunstradio's feed.

Art's Birthday Party is a celebration in memory of Robert Filliou who declared, on January 17 1963, that Art had been born exactly 1,000,000 years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a pail of water. After Filliou's death in 1987, some artists began to celebrate Art's Birthday in the spirit of his concept of "The Eternal Network" or "La Fete permanente". The Birthday parties took place in different cities across the world, and artists were asked to bring birthday presents for Art – works that could be shared over the network.

On Christmas 1906, on the other hand, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden undertook the very first radio broadcast of voice and music. Luckily, he had the foresight to time his experiment exactly, its 100th anniversary practically coinciding with the 1,000,044th birthday of Art.

ABOUT THE WORKS

By compounding the energy of the FM signal, Matthew Burtner's performance Study 1.0 (feedback) for radio transceiver revisits the artist's childhood in Alaska and his ensuing focus on open communication in unoccupied places. David La Spina will present photographs of Burtner's performance at the opening reception - a sort of residual, feedback hum of the opening night.

Juan Matos Capote combines painting, sculpture, and field recordings in Series H, a study of accumulation, absence, and the nature of that which is imagined but unpronounced.

In Jeroen Diepenmaat's pour des dents d'un blanc éclatant et saines. dead birds are reunited with their lost birdsong through the preservational power of phonography.

Michael Graeve and Christoph Dahlhausen create an inaudible, synesthetic feedback loop between two divergent but thematically similar art practices with their minimalist cadavre-exquise, Dialog 1.2.

Pablo Helguera presents new work gleaned from the series Dead Languages Conservatory, last words from all-but-lost languages.

Douglas Henderson exhibits a series of sculptures involving ultra low-level sound components, water, and the visual language of sine-waves.

Pierre Huyghe's Partition de silence (Score of silence) is a transcription of Cage's silent masterwork 4'33” (1952) into a flute sonata achieved via a sound-to-MIDI converter program.

Tarikh Korula and Tianna Kennedy will create a recording stylus in an attempt to unlock the Archeoacoustic sound dormantly sealed in found and historic objects around New York City.

Hearing Red continues the collaborative LoVid's work in blurring sensory boundaries through the use of electrical signals and synaesthetic output: in this case, a pure "Red" video signal is played as "sound" through a speaker, taking its form from the frequency of the video signal.

Lee Ranaldo's 4 organs combines thematic and visual data from Robert Smithson and Steve Reich to reach a third, distended point between the suspension of their respective oeuvres.

Douglas Repetto will realize a new version of the installation, puff bang reverb, a kinetic sculpture and semi-accurate, two-dimensional hyper-zoom, which exposes the secret life of displaced air molecules.

Michelle Rosenberg will present a new series of Ornamental Headphones that reassess our collective, compulsive culture of listening.

Stephen Vitiello's Trio, employs low-frequency sine tones to force the surface of a number of speakers to pulse and vibrate in patterns visible to the eye yet inaudible to human ears.

James Woodfill's film 60hz derives its subject from the constant and pervasive flow of electricity throughout our environment to alter our perceptions of time and movement.
