Greene County Arts Council celebrates thirty year anniversary with performances from Enrico Scull and guests, Rob Hervey (digeridoo), Lex Grey, Azouke Sanon, and Frank Cuthbert.
For thirty years, the Greene County Council on the Arts has brought the arts to our community! Celebrate GCCA’s 30th Anniversary at a Members Musical Picnic Party on Saturday, 12-5 p.m. (rain or shine) on the idyllic setting of free103point9 Wave Farm’s lush grounds of rolling meadows, ponds, and walking paths through mature pine forests surrounded by majestic mountain vistas. Artists, writers and musicians are welcome to join the party at Wave Farm situated in the beautiful foothills of the Catskill Mountains in Acra, New York for this eventful gathering of informal fun. All are encouraged to share a musical or other artistic talent in the form of a song, artwork, creative reading, or anything to make the day more memorable. (Electric hookups for music will be supplied by our hosts.)

Among the exciting lineup of musicians scheduled to perform on Wave Farm’s meadow stage will be Enrico Scull and guests, Rob Hervey on the didgeridoo, Lex Grey, Azouke Sanon, and Frank Cuthbert. Special thanks for the event is extended to GCCA’s picnic committee composed of Patti Ferrara, Ruth Sachs, Sheila Trautman, Iris Kaplan, Lady Ann Dunbar, and, our hosts, Tom and Galen, who will tape and webcast music for the day. Our gracious hosts for the event, free103point9 Wave Farm is a non-profit media arts organization focused on establishing and cultivating the genre Transmission Arts by promoting artists who explore ideas around transmission as a medium for creative expression. free103point9 Wave Farm promotes a rich variety of arts programming through a summer performance series, artist residencies, live online radio performances by visiting artists, and a study center and research archive dedicated to Transmission Arts, opening in 2007. Wave Farm is located off Route 23 at the fork with Route 145. Wave Farm is 3.6 miles from the stop sign at the fork on the right just before the Gilded Grape store and Edison Timmerman Road.

GCCA Members are requested to bring either a covered dish to share in a potluck lunch or contribute a suggested donation of $10 to cover the costs of food and drink. Born in 1964 in Tokyo. Started playing guitar when 13 years old. After some influences from Folk, Rock and Blues, started playing Improvisation in 1981. Founded three piece improv band "Madhar" in 1987. Besides this, has been members of many other units like "Mongoose", "Bject", "Nijiumu" "Amephone", "Hikyo String Quartet" and recently "Satanic Abandoned Rock'n'Roll Society". After releasing the first solo album "Relator"(slub music, 2001), in which used an acoustic guitar with a mixture feeling of country blues and free improv, plays solo more than ever in styles of both acoustic and electric guitars, turntable without records, etc. Using a prepared resonator guitar with a Samurai sword, released the second solo "Resophonie"(a bruit secret, 2002) which can be described as sonic sculpture only by the guitar. In 2003, third solo "Don't Forget to Boogie!" (idea records) was released. Tribute to the instrument, playing in minimal one chord Boogie/Rock/Blues guitar style with a vintage electric guitar tone. In the same year, made a collaboration work with a Japanese young painter, Yoko Naito, contributing tape-delayed electric guitar music for her wood block paintings. A document live album from 2005, "Route 13 to the Gates of Hell: Live in Tokyo" (headz) was selected in the 50 albums of the year by the Wire magazine. Recently, started releasing "official bootleg series" from labels like Esquilo (Portugal)and Utech Records (Milwaukee). Beside these, has played and recorded with many musicians in and outside of Japan and has released a lot of albums. Recently touring around U.S.A., Europe and down under to collaborate with local musicians as well as as a solo Artist to show up to festivals like "What is Music?" (Australia, 2002), Alt Music (New Zealand, 2002 & 2004), Amplify (Tokyo, 2002 & New York, 2003), Musique Action (France, 2003 & 2005), Musiques Innovatrices (France, 2003), Uchiage (Berlin & Vienna, 2004) and Klangspuren (Innsbruck 2005) and Instal (Scotland, 2005).

Chris Forsyth
Guitarist Chris Forsyth lives in Brooklyn, NY, USA. He is a founding member of the beyond category group peeesseye. Other activities include the mysterious and rarely spotted quartet Phantom Limb & Bison and the civil twilight cover band Dirty Pool, plus a history of improvised encounters with the likes of Alessandro Bosetti, Nate Wooley, Burkhard Beins, and Ernesto Diaz-Infante, to name a few. He has performed in many corners of the US and Europe in all manner of venue.

Shawn Hansen
Shawn Hansen, a native of Kansas, is an artist and musician living in Brookyn, NY. His main instruments include saxophone, organs, and analog synthesizer. He performs with his groups the Brothers Zoto and New Scalthzkgazan. Shawn is also the artistic director of KJEA radio, which broadcasts during Earth's hypnagogia - that brief indigo between light and dark. He is currently working on a set of films made from still images and sound called the Atlas Lexicons and his new book, Idols of Space, Doubles in Motion.

Under the not-so-clever moniker of "Uncle Woody Sullender", Woody Sullender performs improvised banjo music, playing with and against the cultural baggage of the instrument. While alluding to the "traditional" musics of his home states of Virginia and North Carolina, he explores a diverse plane of plucked string music from around the world as well as incorporating punk, noise, free jazz, etc.

"The Birds Nest" radio show streams live from the Empty Vessel, a floating artspace in the Gowanus Canal. Tonight's program features various offerings from Portland film and video artists, plus a live performance by solo guitarist Random Cutting. Random Cutting, Gretchen Hogue, Tyler Nolan, Cat Solen, Vladimir, Vanessa Renwick, Tara Jane O'Neil, and Shawna Ferreira will all be a part of the show. Birds Nest radio show streams live from the Empty Vessel, a floating artspace in the Gowanus Canal. Stumptown Girls is a 90-minute program of short films by female filmmakers from Portland, Oregon. The program highlights the DIY, collaborative spirit that this city has grown famous for, featuring an ecclectic selection of work ranging from Cat Solen¹s music video for Bright Eyes to Vladimir¹s handmade viewmaster movies; from Vanessa Renwick¹s collaboration with Portland musician Tara Jane O¹Neil to Shawna Ferreira¹s psychedelic video creations. Stumptown Girls promises to be a night chock full of surprises, inspiration, and good old northwestern spunk! After the films, solo guitarist Random Cutting will play a live show on the boat.

This regular online radio show features live performances from artists visiting free103point9's Wave Farm, a transmission arts park in Upstate New York. Giancarlo Bracchi's June 24th set will include a live performance and DJ set.

"Campfire Sounds" is a weekend-long camp out. Avant-folk performers from throughout the Northeastern United States gather at the 30-acre Wave Farm for special performances in a rural setting. This year there is a main stage, and a second stage in the woods without electricity for acoustic performances. As always, after hours, everyone will gather around the campfire for acoustic sounds late into the night.

PARKING: Park in the large field near the road. Walk in and check your camping reservation at the concession stand.

CAMPERS PITCHING TENTS: Place your tent in the shade (just west of a tree) unless you are seeking a hot morning wake up call from the sun. The woods are the best place for a tent without a 5:30 a.m. wake up call from the sun. PLEASE do not setup tent on the Wave Farm main meadow.

FOOD: Pesto pasta on Friday night; eggs Saturday morning, PB+J and hummus sandwiches, fruit, cold potato soup, veggie burgers and meat burgers Saturday night; and pancakes Sunday morning. Beverages too. Diner within walking distance.

SERVICES: Port-a-let on property, near concession stand. Pond for swimming.

ANIMALS: You may want to bring bug spray/sauce. Definitely check for ticks. Be alert in the woods for the bear. (These bears are not aggressive, but of course close encounters should be avoided. Please keep an eye out if you are exploring paths in the forest.) Dogs are allowed (no biters, please).

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: After the schedule performances on Friday and Saturday night, the mic around the campfire will be open all night, playing to the radios around the property and the internet all over the world.

BRING: Balls (soccer field for playing), grills, bug spray, shoes that can get wet/muddy, flashlights, fishing poles (catch and release bass), etc.

NOISE: Sound carries in unexpected ways around here, please consider that late night noise might disturb a neighbor.

PROPERTY BOUNDARIES: Please respect the Wave Farm property boundaries (see map on back), so that these summer events may continue for years to come.

KEEP WAVE FARM BEAUTIFUL: Please use the ample trash and recycling cans so we can keep the Wave Farm beautiful.

Jesse Selengut's Noir plays mysterious electronic groove-oriented jazz straight from the dark heart of Brooklyn. Matt Mikas hosts this afternoon edition of his New and Used show playing new and vintage recordings and hosting live music at the free103point9 Project Space.

free103point9 is pleased to present three transmission installation works by artists 31 Down, Paul Davies, and Tarikh Korula, as part of this year's Bushwick Art Project festival. Transmission Arts is defined as a conceptual umbrella that unites a community of artists and audiences interested in transmission ideas and tools. Transmission practices harness, occupy and/or respond to the airwaves that surround us. There is an inherent "liveness" to this work. In a performance-based setting, audience members are newly engaged, becoming participants rather than passive viewers and listeners. Installation or sculptural transmission works are often dependent on the present, reacting to whatever occupies the surrounding frequencies in a single instance, or changing that information by adding new signals to the spectral environment.

31 Down, Wanderlost

31 Down is a Brooklyn-based theatre group that uses radio transmission to expand the traditional boundaries of the performance stage. In Wanderlost, 31 Down tackles personal privacy issues and the paranoia surrounding new technologies by eavesdropping on live police scans to search for clues in the world of the dispatcher. Employing the central motif of a 1940s-style detective radio program featuring the fictional case of missing nightclub singer Helen Tremble, Wanderlost creates a tension between fact and fiction.

Paul Davies, Prayer Antenna

As part of his ongoing series, "Religious Technological Artifacts," New York-based Canadian artist Paul Davies presents Prayer Antenna. In the form of an ornately ordained helmet that has the appearance of a porcupine with antennae quills, Prayer Antenna is fitted with sufficient surveillance technology to receive signals from the gods. As Davies writes, "The Prayer Antenna allows visitors, or 'supplicants,' to put their heads into the helmet to receive sounds in the right ear from the God of the Right Shoulder, and in the left ear from the God of the Left Shoulder."

Tarikh Korula, Chop 10

Exploiting the techniques of current commercial radio practice, Chop 10 re-mixes a live, dynamic assemblage of commercial radio streams as a commentary on the current state of regulated radio. As Chop 10 moves from one Arbitron-rated Top Ten radio station in New York City to the next, the hyper "scan" makes it impossible to discern any single station's content, resulting in a jumpy, never-ending parody of commercial radio.

Wanderlost, Prayer Antenna, and Chop 10 were first shown as part of the exhibition Airborne co-organized by free103point9 and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, spring 2005.

Internationally recognized artists Matthew Burtner, Nicolas Collins, and Scanner will each map and respond to the local environs—both physical and ephemeral. The performances will take place on a meadow. Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets; picnic provisions will be available on site. Matthew Burtner
The work of composer and sound artist Matthew Burtner explores environmental systems (ecoacoustics), technological embodiment, and extended polyrhythmic and noise-based musical systems. His instrumental and computer music is performed widely and he tours regularly with the metasaxophone, an augmented computer instrument of his own creation. A native of Alaska, he currently teaches composition and computer music at the University of Virginia, where he is associate director of the VCCM Computer Music Center. Burtner’s Studies for Radio Transceiver question the nature of the radio medium and the role it plays in forming the content of a musical system.

Nicolas Collins
New York born and raised, Nicolas Collins studied with Alvin Lucier and worked for many years with David Tudor. "The first guy to take a computer onto a bar stage" (in the words of George Lewis), Collins combines cutting edge and trailing spine technologies into performances that explore found sound material, acoustic phenomena and musical interaction. His 1985 Devil's Music (one of the first compositions to make use of live sampling) grabbed fragments of radio broadcasts, ham transmissions and cell phone conversations and wove them live into a post-disco, pre-mashup homage to John Cage's Imaginary Landscape No. 4.

Former Artistic Director of STEIM (Amsterdam) and a DAAD Composer-in-Residence in Berlin, Collins teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is editor-in-chief of Leonardo Music Journal. His book, "Handmade Electronic Music - the Art of Hardware Hacking", will be published by Routledge in 2006.

Scanner
From British artist Scanner’s (Robin Rimbaud) early controversial work using found mobile phone conversations to his focus on trawling the hidden noise of the modern metropolis as the symbol of the place where hidden meanings and missed contacts emerge, his explorations traverse the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating absorbing, multi-layered sound pieces that twist technology in unconventional ways. Scanner has performed and created works internationally including SFMOMA USA, Hayward Gallery London, Pompidou Centre Paris, Kunsthalle Vienna, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Tate Modern London and the Royal Opera House London.

AURICLE by MICHELLE ROSENBERG

Michelle Rosenberg has developed a series of works that identify different ways of listening. Auricle is a mobile parabolic sound reflector. This Auricle (pictured above), was first installed in Socrates Sculpture Park in 2005. It amplified lower frequencies such as traffic sounds best to listeners standing in the focus point of the curve with adjustable plastic semi-spheres that include openings for ear placement.
