Strong drops out of Ulster exec race

Feb 26, 2019 12:45 am
Patricia Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman Kingston Democrat Pat Courtney Strong has ended her campaign for Ulster County executive. Strong was denied her party's nomination for the position last week. In an email, Strong wrote, “Last Wednesday, I did not prevail in a vote of the Democratic Committee members at the convention, though I was heartened by the substantial support our campaign received. Despite much urging for me to forge ahead, I’ve decided to not continue my campaign." Strong was competing for the Democratic line in a special election and for the party's endorsement in the November general election, as well. Though denied the endorsement for the special election, Strong still could have run in a June primary for the Democratic line on the November ballot. The Ulster Democrats chose former congressional candidate Pat Ryan over Strong as their candidate in both the special and general elections. The winner of the special election will serve until the end of 2019. The winner of the November election will serve a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2020. Ryan is expected to face a primary challenge in June from former town of Woodstock Supervisor Jeff Moran. Ryan is a U.S. Army veteran and has never held public office. He finished second in the 2018 seven-candidate 19th Congressional District Democratic primary. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
