Tourism on the rise in Greene County and the Catskills Region

Sarah Trafton of Columbia-Greene Media visitors to Greene County in 2018, spent more than $185 million, an increase of 8.4 percent over the previous year, according to a report by Tourism Economics. The firm is commissioned every year by New York state to study the impact of tourism. The Catskills Region in general experienced an 11.3 percent increase in travel spending last year, the most significant growth of any region in the state, according to the report. “We’re very fortunate in our amenities, attractions and lodging partners,” Greene County Tourism Director Heather Bagshaw said in a statement. “We welcome travelers from around the world.... We love sharing Greene County’s treasures,” she said. The report found that Greene County labor income was up nearly 14 percent in 2018, and employment generated by tourism was just under 23 percent countywide, making Greene County the region most dependent on tourism income in the Catskills.
