Martin explains early voting

Feb 11, 2019 12:45 am
Diane Valden reports in The Columbia Paper about how early voting may happen in Columbia County this fall, if everything is set up in time. Columbia County will be required to have one poll site open for early voting, beginning 10 days before and closing two days before Election Day to accommodate eight days of early voting, according to Democratic Election Commissioner with the Columbia County Board of Elections Virginia S. Martin. That's Saturday, October 26 through Sunday, November 3, this year before the Tuesday, November 5 Election Day. Martin says early voting will most likely take place in the county office building at 401 State Street. Martin does not believe early voting increases participation. “It’s resource intensive and work expensive” without a clear benefit, she said. The state, so far, is unclear who will pay for early voting costs. Democrats passed, and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed, several electoral reforms, including early voting.
