Michael Kavanagh joins Ulster Co. DA race

Paul Kirby is reporting for the Daily Freeman Michael J. Kavanagh, an Ulster County prosecutor, has declared his intention to run for district attorney in November. He made the announcement Feb. 16, in a press release. Kavanagh, a Republican, hopes to succeed his boss, District Attorney Holley Carnright of Saugerties. Carnright is not seeking re-election. Kavanagh has been a professional prosecutor for almost 20 years, the last four as chief assistant to Carnright. He is the son of former Ulster DA E. Michael Kavanagh. In November, Kavanagh will be opposed by Democrat David Clegg, a trial lawyer from Woodstock. Clegg was a candidate in the Democratic 19th Congressional primary last year. The Ulster County Democratic Committee will hold its nominating convention Wed., Feb. 20; the county Republican Committee convention will convene Sat., Feb. 23.
