Business owner confronts board over choice for shuttle service
Kaitlin Lembo is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the owner and operator of a local transportation company confronted the Windham Town Board December 28, demanding to know why local officials did not open the newly established municipal shuttle service to competitive bidding or invite him to contribute his buses for use. The board recently approved a contract for free municipal weekend bus services with Valet Park of America. Windham Mountain and the Windham Foundation have agreed to pay for the shuttle. At the meeting Thursday, town Supervisor Robert Pelham explained to Bob Poelker, owner of Majestic Transportation Services, that the board did not create the shuttle service, it was presented with the offer. Pelham first learned about the proposed bus service on December 7, and acknowledged the plan was moved through to approval rather quickly. “Why wouldn’t the town want to keep the business in Greene County?” Poelker said. Pelham acknowledged Poelker's concerns and apologized. "The town is out of it now, though," he said. Although the board approved the contract, it was never signed.
