Advocates urge state lawmakers to cancel rent

Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics the tenants advocacy coalition Housing Justice for All September 7, urged top state Senate and Assembly leaders to support legislation that would cancel rent statewide as the economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The housing coalition flew planes with banners over beaches in the Bronx and Westchester County, urging Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to take up the bill in their respective chambers. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has imposed a moratorium on evictions for both residential and commercial tenants for the rest of the crisis, but the concern is what happens when the crisis ends and the money is due. Advocates estimate that 1.4 million New Yorker renters are behind on their payments.
