DOT warns of detours, delays this weekend in Catskill

Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media motorists should be prepared for long detours March 7, for a construction project at the railroad bridge over the CSX tracks in the village of Catskill. Route 23, between Route 385 and Route 9W, will be closed for approximately nine and a half hours, according to Bryan Viggiani, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation. The closure will allow road crews to use a large crane to position steel beams as part of an ongoing bridge maintenance project, Viggiani said. The closure is expected to begin at 6 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m., according to DOT officials. The work is dependent on the weather with a possible rain date of March 14. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. The span being rehabilitated was once known as the Singing Bridge because of its metal deck that seemed to hum and peal and talk when cars passed over it, Williams writes.
