Antonio Flores-Lobos is the editor of Las Noticias, the largest Spanish language weekly newspaper that serves New York’s Hudson Valley, sponsored by the Daily Freeman. Since he began working at the publication, he has won various awards from the National Association of Hispanic Publications for his columns and articles, and is recognized for his work by different community organizations. Flores-Lobos began life in Mexicali, a dusty desert town on the California-Mexico border. The 15th child born to his parents, at age of 20, he crossed the border and settled in San Diego. There, he attended San Diego City College and became a reporter and photographer for the Ahora Now, La Prensa San Diego and The City Times. He received a scholarship from the California Chicano News Media Association and graduated with an Associated Arts degree in journalism.

The mid-80’s found Antonio in Anchorage, Alaska, where he continued his studies. During seven years spent on the “Last Frontier”, Antonio worked in the salmon industry and traveled throughout the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. He also worked in the oil exploration, which took him onto the frozen Arctic Ocean. It was here in Alaska where he became interested in radio, becoming an assistant producer for “El Canto del Coquí” a Spanish-language news and cultural program that aired once a week in KSKA, Alaska Public Radio.

He has had adventures on both sides of the “Iron Curtain” in the Korean peninsula, East and West Europe and the Philippines (two days after the departure of dictator Ferdinand Marcos and in all of the world’s Spanish-speaking countries, with the exception of Africa’s Equatorial Guinea.)

In 1990, Antonio moved to New York City, where he attended Hunter College and met the love of his life. He did his last year of college at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. Returning to the city, he graduated with a BA in media studies and a minor in international politics. He took a position at Luminarios, a Spanish-language spiritual magazine. Antonio also served as the sports editor of El Daily News, a bilingual publication created by the New York Daily News.

Antonio then embarked upon a career as a high school bilingual social studies teacher in the New York City Public School System. Eight years and three daughters later, Antonio realized that it was time to escape from the cement jungle. In the fall of 2003, the family relocated to the more tranquil and peaceful village of Woodstock, NY.

Mariel Fiori, MBA, is a journalist, translator, educator and an entrepreneur. She co-founded and is the managing editor of the Bard-sponsored La Voz, cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle de Hudson. Founded in 2004, the award- winning La Voz is the only Spanish language magazine serving the 125,000+ Latinos living in the Mid-Hudson Valley. She co-hosts a weekly Spanish language news radio show for WGXC and WHDD, and is a bilingual business counselor and instructor with WEDC-MHV (Women Enterprise Development Center Mid-Hudson Valley).

Fiori holds an MBA from NYU, Stern School of Business and a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Latin American and Iberian Studies from Bard College. Before coming to the United States in 2003, she lived and worked for two years in Spain, and previously in Buenos Aires, her hometown, where she earned a degree in journalism and studied legal and commercial English-Spanish translation at the Catholic University of Argentina. She has worked for different mass media groups and independent media in Argentina, Spain and the United States as a researcher, writer, translator, editor and radio and television producer.

Thanks to her passionate work with La Voz, Fiori has been the recipient of the Dutchess County Executive Arts Award in 2010, and La Voz has received four Ippies awards from the New York Community Media Alliance. On March 24th, 2012, she was one of the recipients of the award 40 under 40 rising Latino Stars by the Hispanic Coalition of NY. In October 2014, Fiori was recognized as Woman Entrepreneur of the Year by GET Hudson Valley.

Since 2006 she has co-produced and co-host a weekly radio show in Spanish, ¿Qué cocinaré hoy? (What is cooking today?) that airs three times a week on WGXC 90.7FM and WHDD 88.1FM, 91.7FM, 91.9FM ,1020AM and WGHQ 920AM, and online on wgxc.org and robinhoodradio.com

Fiori is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, NAHJ, the Ulster County Hispanic Advisory Board, Mano a Mano Coalition, the American Association of University Women, AAUW, and the American Translators Association, ATA. From 2007 to 2013 she was a board member of Somos la Llave del Futuro, SLF, Inc., a Dutchess county based non-profit organization which seeks to build leadership in immigrant communities, and from August 2010 to May 2015 she has been a board member of Family of Woodstock, Inc., an Ulster County based 40 year-old service agency.
