Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the Greene County Legislature agreed Oct. 2 unanimously to spend an additional $1.3 million on a garage next to the $70 million new jail in Coxsackie. In March the Legislature voted 7-for-and-7-against the garage, with those opposed saying it was redundant and/or extravagant. Not so this time around. There was discussion at the Public Safety Committee meeting, but no legislators offered a resolution to reduce or eliminate the garage, thus approving the expenditure. Last October Greene County Legislator William Lawrence, a Republican from Cairo and chairperson of the Public Safety Committee, said, on average, Greene County residents can expect a 6.73 percent tax increase next year because of the construction of the jail, not including the garage. The tax increases are similar across the county with Windham residents seeing the lowest increase of 6.48 percent, and Ashland residents receiving the largest increase, of 6.91 percent.
