Windham delays, again, sign decision

May 02, 2018 10:53 am
Carly Miller in Columbia-Greene Media reports that it has been a long, 18-year journey to allow 25-by-45-inch signs in the town of Windham, and now the wait is going to be a little bit longer. “We’re going to go through this paragraph by paragraph to find out the legalities,” Councilman Don Murray said. “We can’t rush this process.” Public comments at recent town meetings ranged from the all-signs-should-be-free variety to let's-be-careful-now. “I think it’s unnecessary to have permission for a sign on a sidewalk that belongs to the town of Windham,” said Cordelia Schreiber, co-owner of Ze Windham Wine Bar. Others, thought it was necessary. “The problem with sandwich boards is that they proliferate,” said Larry Tompkins, Windham historian and former president of the Mountain Top Historical Society. “Windham is the most beautiful, elegant, sophisticated town on the mountaintop,” he added. “People look up to Windham and follow Windham’s lead; we don’t need to spoil that by going the wrong way.” The Windham Town Board has now twice delayed a vote on the issue and next meets at 7 p.m. May 10.
