The Daily Freeman reports that Kristopher Cowan of Valatie, a corrections officer at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility, was charged Nov. 22 with defrauding the state Workers Compensation system of more than $30,000. The state Inspector General’s Office said Cowan was charged with 34 felony counts of offering a false instrument for filing, and the felonies of grand larceny, and possession of a forged instrument. Cowan repeatedly filed claims for a work-related injury suffered in May 2015 at the Coxsackie prison, and then remained out of work while receiving full pay. He filed 34 fake documents purportedly from medical practitioners saying he was too incapacitated to work. Cowan was released Nov. 22 after being arraigned in Athens Town Court.
