Indian Point transfers spent nuclear fuel

Mid-Hudson News reports that the owners of the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear power plant have transferred all 3,998 spent nuclear fuel assemblies to dry cask storage. The spent fuel rods were being stored in densely packed fuel cooling pools since the facility was closed permanently in 2021. Now the spent fuel rods are stored in 127 reinforced concrete and steel casks on the site’s spent fuel storage installations. Holtec, the company that owns the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear power plant along the Hudson River in Westchester County, wanted to release radioactive water into the Hudson River, but the state blocked those efforts this summer.
