Sports betting could come to New York

Matthew Hamilton reports in Capitol Confidential that lawmakers in Albany are considering allowing betting on sports in casinos, off-track betting parlors, and race tracks. “The lawyers are looking at that right now,” said Democratic Westchester Assemblyperson Gary Pretlow, who chairs the Assembly’s Racing and Wagering committee. Lawmakers may speed the process, finding different legal strategies to avoid the amendment process which would take two years. New Jersey made passed a similar sports betting law in 2012, which was challenged by several sports leagues. The Supreme Court will hear the case Dec. 4, and is expected to rule on the issue by summer next year. Nevada, Montana, Oregon, and Delaware allow sports betting as they were grandfathered under the 1992 federal law that banned it elsewhere. Read the full story in Capitol Confidential.
