Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is expected to approve an extension on the ban on residential evictions in New York that is due to expire on Sunday. At the same time, state lawmakers are considering legislation that could strengthen the moratorium. "Obviously we update these things as we go," said Melissa DeRosa, the governor's top advisor this week. "We're not going to let anybody who's evicted due to these circumstances be evicted." The ban is meant to prohibit evictions of tenants who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Housing advocates are pressing for a stronger ban through legislation. State lawmakers are considering a special legislative session as early as next week to vote on the matter. One provision, as reported, could ban all evictions statewide in the coming weeks and any evictions for tenants demonstrating financial hardship.
