Rensselaer County Clerk will process all driver's licenses

Dec 23, 2019 10:54 am
Rebecca Carballo reports in the Times Union that Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola has relented and his office is going to process driver's license applications from undocumented immigrants. A state law went into effect Dec. 16 mandating the change, but Merola's office has not yet been processing applications. He claims he did not have time to properly train his staff, but will have them all ready by the end of the week. Merola, a Republican, had a federal judge throw out his lawsuit attempting to overturn the new state law, that's called by some the Green Light Law. Meanwhile, across the state, the county clerks have been busy. On the law's first day, a total of 2,881 Class D standard permits were issued to residents in state-operated DMV offices, almost triple the daily average of 1,005.
