Feb 14, 2018 2:30 pm
The Daily Freeman reports that the Dutchess and Greene counties are among the five worst jails in New York, according to a state Commission of Correction report released Feb. 14. The jails are listed among “the most problematic local correctional facilities” in New York. Alphonso David, Governor Andrew Cuomo's chief counsel, said the state wants a quick resolution to what he called “systemic, unconscionable and illegal conditions” at the five jails. Dutchess County is currently building a new jail. Greene County is talking about building a new jail. The Greene County Jail, in Catskill, was built in 1908. “These facilities pose an ongoing risk to the health and safety of staff and inmates and, in instances, impose cruel and inhumane treatment of inmates in violation of their Constitutional rights,” the commission said in the report.
