Hoosick Falls set to approve settlement

Jan 27, 2017 12:02 am
Brendan J. Lyons reports in The Albany Times-Union the village of Hoosick Falls town board signaled it will vote soon on a controversial settlement agreement it reached with two companies blamed for polluting the local water supply. On Jan. 25, the town's website was updated with a post addressing concerns raised by community members about the settlement. The board would have voted on the proposal earlier, but a resident complained there was no notice of the settlement or public hearing. Local residents then flooded a public hearing with objections to the settlement. Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics and Honeywell International would pay $850,000 to cover expenses since the toxic manufacturing chemical PFOA was discovered in the town's water in 2014. "This agreement protects local taxpayers by ensuring village expenses are reimbursed and lost revenues are replenished, without the necessity of borrowing money," is now on the village's website now. David Engel, an attorney for a citizens' group, Healthy Hoosick Water, disagreed. "The document issued by the village does nothing to allay or resolve the concerns raised by those in attendance at the January 12 meeting," Engel said. "The proposed settlement document remains unacceptable and requires substantial modifications before it should be reconsidered by the Board. The draft settlement fails to meet the minimal of requirements for resolving any of the claims that the village has against those companies responsible for contaminating the village water supply."
