Few homeless veterans in Ulster County

The Mid-Hudson News Network reports in The Daily Freeman that the number of homeless veterans in New York dropped from 5,765 to 1,248 from 2011 to 2016, the state Comptroller’s Office said Nov. 10. In Ulster County, community programs have been effective in reducing the number of homeless veterans, the report from Thomas DiNapoli's office said. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports between 20 to 30 homeless veterans in Ulster County. “Although the homeless veteran community may never be fully eliminated due to practical limitations, the situation in Ulster County can best be described as having a population of ‘functional zero.’ Everyone who is receptive to assistance has received help,” DiNapoli said in the report.
