Heather Bellow reports for The Berkshire Eagle that a student attack at Bard College at Simon's Rock and racist graffiti found on campus before the incident were both likely fabricated to spark dialogue on campus about racism, according to independent investigators hired by the school. The Berkshire County District Attorney's Office dropped the case for lack of evidence in November. Bard College at Simon's Rock is in Western Massachusetts, and affiliated with the Dutchess County college. In September, an 18-year-old student claimed she had been assaulted, knocked unconscious, and dragged into the woods while walking on campus. That led to a professor resigning, citing concerns about the administration's handling of the alleged attack. "The investigators spent several days on campus, interviewed twenty-nine individuals, spoke with local police, and reviewed documentary evidence, including communications sent by College employees and officials; photographs of the graffiti; and the physical location and surroundings of the reported assault," wrote Provost and Vice President Ian Bickford, Acting Provost Dimitri Papadimitriou, and Vice Provost Sue Lyon.
