Last four billboards in Claverack will soon be gone

May 19, 2021 6:00 am

Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media four remaining billboards on Route 66 in Claverack will soon be gone. The town changed its zoning code 10 years ago to remove billboards town wide. The four remaining ads are on Route 66 — the first set is located on the Greenport town line and advertises Ginsberg’s and Meerkat Pest Control; the second set is nearby, across from the Dutch Village Trailer Park, advertising Meerkat and Columbia Memorial Health. The set near the trailer park was scheduled to be removed by January, so the company must now pay a $1,900 fine and take the billboards away soon, according to Claverack Town Board members Katy Cashen. The other set, closer to the line with Greenport, is due to be taken down by next year. Cashen said the rule to eliminate billboards was adopted in 2009 or 2010. At the time the town had about a dozen billboards, some in poor condition, and were no longer welcome. The ad boards are owned by Clear Channel, which agreed to do away with the signs over the course of a decade, Cashen said. The billboards formerly located on Route 23 and Route 9H have already been removed, Cashen said. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
