Putnam Republican proposes voter ID law

May 07, 2018 3:45 pm
Carl Campanile is reporting in the New York Post Republican New York state Sen. Terrence Murphy, of Putnam, is drawing criticism for proposing legislation that would require state residents to present a government-issued photo ID to vote. While Murphy and others who support voter ID laws say they work as a safeguard against fraud, opponents, including Democratic lawmakers and civil rights groups, argue the laws discriminate against minorities and lead to voter suppression. “This is right out of the Trump playbook. Legislation like this has no place in New York. We need to make it easier to vote and not set up unnecessary roadblocks or dangerous scare tactics,” said Senate Democratic minority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Murphy defended the bill saying the bill asks for the same residency requirements as a "recreational fishing license." Read the full story in the New York Post.
