Cairo contemplating a battery storage moratorium

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Cairo town officials are now thinking about imposing a six-month moratorium on battery storage projects after a pending proposal raised some questions, town Supervisor John Coyne said. “This is a brand-new concept,” he said. “We want to make sure we protect the community.” A public hearing on the proposed moratorium was held last week and the board is expected to make a decision next month. The proposal calls for the construction of a 20-megawatt facility near the Central Hudson substation, across from the Dojo Martial Arts and Fitness Academy on Route 32, Coyne said. “There are still a lot of questions out there about the impact to the environment, to the tax base,” Coyne said. “It works in other communities but we want to have everything in place to protect our community.” Cairo is also working with a solar company on a project located at the town’s sewer treatment plant, Coyne said.
