WGXC Morning Show: Ruth Adams, Gavin Berger, Joseph Piasek, Hugh Johnson (Audio)

Oct 07, 2021

In the latest Hudson Valley Word of Mouth segment, Julia Joern visits Ghent in Columbia County to meet with Ruth Adams and Gavin Berger, the co-executive directors of Art Omi. Originally founded over thirty years ago as an artist-in-residency program, today Art Omi spans over 120 acres of sprawling fields, vast pastures, and winding wooded paths. Its Sculpture and Architecture Park currently features 60 large-scale works installed throughout the landscape where visitors get to experience art in nature, whether it's on their own or in a guided group tour, through workshops and educational initiatives, and even by cross-country skiing. Welcoming guests upon arrival is the Beneson Center. Designed by FT Architecture, this environmentally progressive LEED certified building is Art Omi's venue for indoor events and also houses staff offices, a cafe, and a 1500-square foot exhibition space. Now on view in its gallery is 'To Feel Myself Beloved on the Earth,' a solo show of quilts, garments, drums, prints, and video by Choctaw-Cherokee artist and MacArthur Fellow, Jeffrey Gibson. Since its start, Art Omi has hosted over 2,000 artists, architects, dancers, musicians, writers, and translators from over 100 countries. These residency programs continue to culminate in recitals, performances, talks, readings, and symposiums offered to the general public. Also, tune in for another "Is Radio Dying" segment, this one with WOOC's Caelan Mcpherson talking with Joseph Piasek, the founder of WIOX 91.3-FM, a radio station in Roxbury NY. Joseph and Caelan talk about how WIOX is affected by the pandemic, How WIOX has locally produced radio shows. Plus, retired Meteorologist Hugh Johnson talks about the fall weather. We had a wet summer and a may have a warm October; what does that mean for the foliage brightness?

The WGXC Morning Show is a radio magazine show featuring local news, interviews with community leaders and personalities, reports on cultural issues, a rundown of public meetings and local and regional events, with weather updates, and more about and for the community, made mostly through volunteers in the community through WGXC. The Catskill Makers Syndicate produce the "Better Weather" for the show. Rob Gelles produces the Columbia County history segment "Rob Around The County" and "This Month in History" for the show. Julia Joern produced the "Hudson Valley Word of Mouth" interview segment each week. The "WGXC Congressional Report" also airs here. Some reports come from our partner station, WOOC-LP in Troy, out of The Sanctuary for Independent Media. Tom Roe also cuts up local and national news with songs and sounds for the show. At 9 a.m. "The WGXC Daily," with local headlines, weather, and previews of community events, airs. At 10 a.m., national headlines from Public News Service are on WGXC. Sometimes national, state, or local press conferences, meetings, or events are broadcast live here.
