Cairo looking into reopening its recycling center

May 24, 2021 5:45 am

Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup Cairo officials are thinking about bringing back the town's recycling center. At the town board meeting last week, the discussion turned to the idea of reopening the facility, located in Angelo Canna Town Park, for several hours on every Saturday. The town board voted unanimously last fall to close the center after non-recyclable junk — such as furniture, mattresses, vinyl siding, a tractor ,and even a hot tub were dumped at the center. The facility was not staffed at that time, and residents were expected to follow rules on what could and could not be left at the center. “It needs to be staffed,” said Supervisor John Coyne. “It just can’t be a free-for-all.” If the town reopens the facility, Coyne said, staff would be present from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday by the same employee who comes in to water flowers. Allowable items would include plastic, glass and tin. The board agreed that security measures could need to be taken. “Any other transfer station or recycling center in the county has security,” said board member Steve Kralovich. “We didn’t. That’s why we got what we got.” Read the full story at porcupine soup [dot] com.
