Rosa Acheson is reporting in the Register-Star Hudson Second Ward Alderman Tiffany Garriga announced Mon., May 8, she will run for Common Council President in November. Incumbent president, Republican Claudia DeStefano, said right now she is not planning to run for re-election, but "...it's kind of early to tell." Democrat Garriga has served on the council for four terms and said she sees the move to Common Council president as the "next step." She said, “With the work I have done in the Second Ward and the things I have accomplished, I would like to use that energy for the entire city, I’m ready for the challenge.” The 38-year-old mother of two relocated to Hudson from New York City 20 years ago. If elected, Garriga said she "plans to appoint more committees and to work on issues brought to Common Council members by their constituents." Outside of politics, she chairs the Staley B. Keith Social Justice Center Board of Directors. She also serves on the boards of the United Way of Columbia-Greene Counties, the Women’s Health Project, It Can Happen 2 You Inc., the Justice League and on the Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood Steering Committee. Candidates will start gathering signatures on designating petitions June 6. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
